Default SCCA Infinion (Sears Point) Race -- Results and pictures

looks like the Labor day weekend race should be an exciting one again with SCCA in ITE. with 48 entries now, and 21 in ITE class it should be a good race. The favorite is the 440 rear wheel hp Evo and then its probably the M3 and more than likely the 355 ferarri Challenge car and me fighting for 3rd. Then, a bunch of pumped camaros, Rx7 turbo, and a C5 vet with some 911s, other BMWs, some mazdas as well.

Nothing compared to what will be at laguna on oct 2nd. that looks to be filled with Speed World challenge Touring and GT cars getting practice for the WC race later that month. There is a viper or two i should have a good battle with, as well as any fast speed touring cars that decide to show up. Laguna will have at least 4-5 vipers on grid.'

Getting back to sears point, this evo will be double stinted in the GT1 class with car builder and sponsor John Mueller driving (very famous dad,and good driver in his own right) . I wonder how long a 2 liter engine will survive putting down 440hp at the wheels and a long weekend! Laguna will be even more punishing, as we will have 2 races plus a bonus points race! I dont know. anderson putting 440 to 470 at the wheels at 6.5 liter vs a little 2 liter with stock internals??? pretty amazing if it survives. It may weaken and i may have a chance by the 3rd race at laguna!!

I had a modfied Evo come up alongside me last night on the freeway and do a couple of challenging revs. Rarely happens here in CA (too much traffic). I blinked my lights and waved and let him drive on.

Moderately tuned Evo's don't appear to have much power up high on the street. Coming back from San Fran a few weeks ago I tangled with one and spoke to the driver afterward. He was cool too. He pretty much knew he'd pull me for a little bit and then I'd walk him the higher up we we got which is what happened. Had flames shooting out the pipe too. Obviously he wasn't at 400+hp.

he probably wasnt in the right gear. they have a similar HP curve to our cars, even up to the same range redline. this evo at 400hp (340 rear wheel ) was fast everywhere, and didnt have any trick stuff done , ahhhh, except for motec, cams , and thats about it . ha ha. now at 440 rear wheel, he destroyes the stock vipers at 500 hp, but heavy. (and he is a rookie driver too!)
I think the normal stock Evo is rated at 300 or so flywheel hp. i guess they just turn up the boost for 400hp.

Default good weekend of racing

http://www.usracingsport.blogspot.com/

Had a great time at the Sears Point Infinion Raceway SCCA race this weekend. Dennis made it out to watch the race and chat.

3rd in class (ITE) and a best time of 1:49.2 in qual on some still used hoosiers and 1:49.5 in the race on the same tires. (previous best was 1:50.1 from last sesaon) I think flappy may be helping as well as the better used tires!

Those Evo (Mitsubishi Lancer) folks have really made a racing machine over this season. its not a BOMB! The rookie driver Kent Jordan ran 1:45.2 in qualifying and i think he ran only 3 laps total. the car is probably as fast as Andersons monster, and this evo has almost as much HP, is slightly heavier but has 4X4!!!! It now has the Audi world challenge RS6-like wide body kit and is running brand new 305 hoosiers on all 4 corners. it really shines at track like this! (and almost an track!) he ran away from the ferarri Challenge 360 modina like it was a spec miata!! (driven by a guy that took 10th in Canada in a Motorola Ferrari challenge race this year.) The best part about my weekend is that i got to fill the mirrors of this Ferrari all race long and almost had a chance to pass. otherwise, it was worth the price of admission to have a ferrari race video.

a bunch of folks came over to my pit (my pit, means my car and a bunch of tires and stuff stacked next to someones trailer) and were all excited to see such an old car hang with a $200k ferrari challenge 360 modina. they asked what i had in it, i said " its just a stock 928 with some big tires and a set of headers." some laughs followed! Then, when they found out its been driven to the track for its 55th track day no DNFs and always driven home (knock knock), there was a few more chuckles!

what a car, what else can i say!

now, Laguna for a 3 race weekend in 3 weeks as the season comes to a close.

I like that bottom picture
The car looks a bit menacing as it sits behind the ferrari!

Good showing...again! Nice job.

Nice work Mark! So how did the 350 Z's do? Drove one of those when they first came out....nice car...but didn't have the balance of a 928!

Heres a ??? how are the divisons seperated....I see NA ferraris-928-old mustangs & the turbo evo...is it just a street legal class where everything runs? So the EVO is the fastest car out there...even better than the race preped Vipers with 4 times the displacement? I'd like to see the EVO run against Fan or Anderson's 928....that would be interesting!

The 350z was pretty quick for a heavy bone stock car. it runs in T2 class (vipers vets street porsche GT3 are T1) and all others are in T2 with the real small engines in T3.

The run group in Group 1 is made up of 6 classes, all production based or production cars on DOT tires. ITE, one of the classes is ANYTHING goes as long as the car was a production vehicle running DOT tires. (ie no viper comp coupes, or GT3 cup cars, but regular vipers with all mods are fine)

yes, the evo is now at the level of the Competition coupe viper and certainly Mark Anderson and Joe Fans car. think about it. that little evo now has Motons, 305s on each corner 4x4 all wheel drive, AND about as much HP. (all out of a 2.4 liter!) so, just as Mark Andersons 550hp 928 can get beat by the 4x4 audis, it certainly can get beat by this little menacing Evo. However, in a race today, Mark and Joe would have the advantage due to their experience. As Mark A how hard it is to go out on DOTs at Sears point and run 1:45.2 , especially by a rookie that has only been there testing before once! that is one fast car! right now, he is keeping up with the viper comp coupes with some more than average drivers in them today, but still 2-3 seconds slower than the fast guys.

MK

PS, you should have seen the 2 cameros. 500hp cameros with all the goodies. two of them. however, those things just are not that fast at the track (compared to the little stock 4 seater cruiser , 20 year old 928 with a set of headers) They didnt run all that slow, running in the 1:52s which is about a second slower than Anderson ran in speedvision in 1999 with only the 420hp rear wheel hp racer.

Yes, Anderson should show up and break this guys winning streak. I beat him on his debut outing race at Laguna, now he has been building this car every single race with new bolt ons. Now, he has 500+ hp, (up from 345hp at the wheels at the start), 305s on each corner, big CF wings, new motons, ECU, always had the $10k Motec data aqu. system, and much, much more.

Hey mark A and Joe F., why dont you come up to the SCCA Laguna race Oct 2nd. you can leave your trailer at my house and ill drive it up to Sears for you for the late Oct race at Sears! its a 3 race weekend, with lots of track time and 3 races against not only this evo, but all the local viper guys will be there to tune up for their speedgt. (all the race prepared hot vipers) You and joe should come out. Joe wants a piece of you anyway, and he was smelling blood in the water and then the race ended after 10 laps, 6 official laps. the SCCA races are timed 30min, so its a pretty good racing environment. Also, the best part is 103 dB noise !!!!!! yeah boy! it would be great to see you guys up here!!!!!!!!!!!!
what do you say?
