Why would the oil breather hose be plugged like this? I have taken the plastic electrical tape off of the various splits in it, BTW. It was in the back seat under the rest of the stuff taken off the engine when I picked the car up.

Recommended sources for replacement?
Kryptonite runs, but discovered that the clutch is in the same shape as a couple of threads here ... flat on the floor.
Cheers,
Dave

Normally, a water line runs through there, providing heat. Someone once told my why, but I forgot.
I imagine that the water line is also plugged. I'm headed out to the garage and will take a look at how it's plumbed while I'm out there.

Thanks Dave, I appreciate your help.
I have PET but I don't have a Windows PC running right now and PET will not install in Linux even running the Windows emulator.
928 International has a used replacement hose for $50 but I am going to look at the Junk Yard in Manchester, TN, which has a load of 928 parts laying around in various states of rot.
Of course, driving my truck to Manchester (50 miles) and back, lunch, and gas and digging for the part will add up to at least 3 times what I can get a clean part from 928Intl .... but somehow it will "feel' like I am saving money.
Here are a couple of more pictures of it. No evidence of a water hose or tube. Very clever use of a rubber sealant coated bolt as a plug, actually. Not sure why the other end was sliced off.

OK, the hose for that comes off the top rear of the water bridge and attaches to a steel line that runs through the vent tube. At the other end, a piece of hose connects the rear of that steel line to a fitting on the top rear of the driver side cylinder head. They probably sliced off the one end because they didn't know what else to do with it.

The tube was to heat the crankcase oil vapors so they wouldn't condense in the filter housing. Can't say if it really worked that well. What did work on other German cars and later Porsches was a rubber plug with a 1/8" orifice which let the vapors through but not the condensed oil.

Am I thinking this through correctly??

Since most of the blowby which causes the vapors is generated when the engine is cold, there wouldn't be enough heat in the tube to really help. An engine that has a lot of blowby, even when warm, could benefit from the heating, but to what extent? If the tubes ever go on my 78's, I'll probably replace them with the $30 924NA vent tube and cap the water lines.

Chief,
Give me a little while to crank up my Pet. Got it but it changed a little.
The hose is 18 mm ID and the part number is N 020 343 1 and now they show an end cap part # 930 110 256 01. The hose is normally ordered in meter lenghts.

Not to worry, I call everyone sir these days including myself when I wake up in the morning. "Sir! you woke up again! Good show Sir!".
Seriously, I went to Pep Boys and Auto Zone to see if they had some 1" diameter oil breahter hose. Nada. I'm sure JC Whitney has random lengths of it.
Also, I picked up some 3.2mm tube and metric fittings to reconnect the twisted off cold start fuel feed line. Wow, metric fitting kits at Pep Boys .. and they work.
While there I priced an air filter ... would you believe $108.00 special order????
Cheers

Dave,
Might try AutoZone for the filter. I bought one of theirs for the 931 and it was only $3.00 more than mail order but no freight charge. BTW it was an OEM (Conti) filter with a Fram name stamped on the side.

I already checked out the Big Three and would order from one of them first just on principle, anyway. I was just checking ... I am a yard-sale person at heart, and never buy anything at the first price.
Cheers!
