I'm a convert. I'd "inherited" alot of A/T cars (not 928's) growing up, but whenever paid my own cash it had to be a manual. Even when I started my personal hunt for a 928, I knew it would have to be a 5 speed. With one exception, the 5 speeds were all pretty well abused though, so I started looking at the A/T's which were usually in much better shape. I drove an '80 Euro A/T and an 85 A/T, and while impressed it still didn't have the power delivery I was looking for. I finally got a chance to drive on S4 A/T. SOLD!
The best advice is to drive both, see what individual car does it for you. I've driven some of both that have been tanks or dogs, and others of both that are true gems.
