I am worried when I see sh-t like that. What the hell happened? Turn in your tools and forget about working on that car yourself. I want the headgaskets back!!!!
Just kidding. I look forward to hearing what failed. P.S. use loctite on the oil pump nut. Could have you left the key way out during reassembly?

Unless I'm wrong, this means the pump itself failed (or the gear came off) and the engine itself isn't F.U.B.A.R.
To us and the other desk-chair diagnosticians here: could a too-tight belt result in some bizarre wear of the oil pump's shaft?
No matter what - Good luck BD.

If I recall correctly, your 'troubles' of last year were due to the (corroded) water pump-mounted pivot bolt getting increasingly bent as you compensated for belt looseness by - several times - tightening the belt.

I'm fully aware that the belt SHOULD have slipped given the slack caused by the gear being the way it is. I got lucky.

Big Dave:
Could be it just came loose and the shavings are from the gear grinding on the shaft and the other things around the gear area.
Be careful, since you are at TDC that things don't go SPRONG when you remove the center cover, the belt flies off and the cams spin around. Best would be to try to "fix" the cams so they cannot move or somehow get the pulley to 45 degrees BTDC.
Anyway, it looks pretty good that you are not in too much trouble. I calling off the human sacrifice for now. The simple offerings I made earlier seem to have quieted the TB Gods.

I'm pretty relaxed about the whole thing. I managed to pull the front end of the engine off (fan, caps, covers, belts, etc) in about an hour, working at a leisurely pace. It's funny how much quicker it goes when you're familiar (very familiar) with everything. I didn't even need to drain the coolant or pull the hoses.

Wow... hopefully that's just an issue with the sprocket coming off the pump. If the shaft is skewed then you're not going to enjoy going after all the shavings in the oil galleys. Hoping for the best....

Dave,
Sorry to hear bud. I kept an eye out for the 928's when i was on woodward. I did see one, but it was by its lonesome. A pinkish colored S4, well it at least had the S4 spolier on it.
Good luck.
