Doors: You can loose 15 pounds per door in just trim, speakers, and window regulator with electric motor alone... 30 pounds for 2 doors.
Replace or remove the window glass for even more.

What would be really cool is to be able to retrofit the manual window cranks that PorKen pointed out in the "did you know" thread.

Even if you keep the window glass (over switching to lexan or the like)....there is a nice weight loss....

What did the Porsche 928 window crank look like?...

later,

I would also love to convert my track car to crank windows. Not only will it weigh less, I could then remove the switches in the middle and more wires.

My track car still has the heater core and blower. My first step this spring is removing this stuff - any idea how much all of this weighs?

I'm dancing that fine line of making my car lighter but still looking like a complete car. Is there a known carpet type (fire resistant) out there I could cover everything in once the sound material is removed?

I have read about the window cranks for the rare 928 CS - but never seen them. I bet you could adapt an early 911 crank to it pretty easily.

Personally, I'm taking mine to the strap idea like the early 356 racers had - their's was a leather belt, I'm using a nylon strap. I'll put up some pics when it is finished. I am keeping the glass for the time being and still drive this car on the street - so I want to be able to put them up and down.... otherwise, I'd just take the glass out and be done with it.

The heater core and blower are a very good weight savings, and up high in the car. 20 pounds at least.

I may eventually do a race car 928. It would be a great challenge to get it as light as possible.

In general, it is easier to get weight off the rear of the 928 than the front, so this makes the "bumper delete" a hot spot. 30 pounds is a bunch when you are down to shaving pounds-at-a-time elsewhere...

But: is it really a good idea on the street-driven 928? This aluminum bumper ties your two front 5 mph bump-shocks in place, and without it, you loose your "5 mph " bumper.

Compromise option: after removing the front cosmetic cover, take a RotoZip or hole saw and lighten the aluminum bumper aircraft-style. You can remove about half the weight in a matter of hours (about 15 pounds). This method also allows you to keep your driving and fog lamp attachment points.

I did this with a 5 inch hole saw. I'm not done yet, but it works very well.
Going to Euro bumper "pipes" instead of shocks is also a great weight savings.
All that, combined with no AC heat exchanger, no headlights or brackets, could really change the driving dynamic of a racing 928. I hope to accomplish some of this on my street 78.

Brendan - people have asked me for pics of the lightened bumper support and I do not have any.

Do you have pics of that bumper support with the 5" holes in it? Even if it is not "completed" that'd be fine - sort of a before-and-after deal.

Save your plugs and weight them for us...

BTW: I found that the weight of the AC compressor vs the weight of the supercharger I mounted in the same spot was almost a dead swap. The SC unit was maybe 1/2 pound lighter.

Of course, then you remove the AC evaporator core, condenser, lines, etc...

I will try and get some pics to you. You said 15lbs removed. I'm not sure how you could get THAT much, but its a good savings. I guess you could buy a 2.5 inch hole saw as well and try to fill in the larger spaces where the 5 inch would not work.

Same, really, for the rear bumper. You could keep it there (I have been thinking of removing it totally) and swiss cheese it as well. Then it could be used for the accusump if you have kept your HVAC fan as I have (I need AC).

You guys are really on the edge, my car has had several owners, and as I have said before I would buy the car again if I could. Chill out.

Battery and Aluminum Battery Box: replace both and save 22 pounds!

The early cars (78,79) have bolt-on battery boxes that are mounted to the rear of the transaxle.
