Default Stereo Replacement-The basics!

I've got an 88 S4 with original radio / cassette stereo and after a year of crap reception I bought a new head unit and ariel.
I've replaced the ariel and ariel wire to head unit and then removed the existing head unit to discover the ancient 9 pin connector at the back- now maybe that just highlights my total ignorance or incompetence as the new unit comes with block connectors and I figured I'd just hard wire it, the million dollar question(s) is HOW?
I reckon I could figure out the constant live, ignition and earth- it's the speakers that get me, coupled with the amplifier.
Has anyone already figured out the nine pin speaker connection configeration- what colours go to front left etc. etc. or do I wire in at the amplifier?
I've searched the threads and you guys are on a totally different playing field- any chance someone could explain it to the cave man?

First, get Prospero to tell Ariel to get it together.

Second, stop letting Caliban help in the garage. ;-)

algie928s4 asked a serious question. Would someone answer it? I'd like to know as well.

All of the speaker wires are located next to the amp, which is located on the right hand side of the passenger seat. I would guess that the new head unit is more powerful than the amp, so I plan on bypassing the amp and running new speaker wires to the head unit. One thing that I have discovered is Blaupuntk used 2 olm speakers and everything today is 4 olms. So I plan on replacing the speakers as well.

I would try on the web to look up the original radio head unit user manual or wiring colours - my 83 came with head unit manual so I am okay here when i decide to replace it. An email to maker of head unit might get a response, or at least tell you their std colours? In my experience, most speaker leads are colour with black trace is a ground, colour is a +ve lead; l-r and f-r colours varied in the past - commonly grey, green etc, not primary colours, these days they tend to standardized - column B of this page http://www.geocities.com/svxdc/Legacy-pinout.htm shows std colours now.
You can find which leads go to which speakers with a dry battery - take each pair of speaker wires and put one on -ve, wipe other over positive - this will usually give you an audible scratchy sound from a speaker connected.

The WSM has wiring diagrams for the stereo.

My page on the install for my '91 http://members.rennlist.com/worf928/91si.html has a wiring diagram with the pin-outs for the DIN connector. The factory system uses a single ground wire and the factory harness has 6 conductors only. I built a harness adaptor to use the DIN connector and ran two extra wires to the amp location for the fourth speaker.

BTW, your crappy reception may have been a bad aerial connection all along...I found out mine was in the end.
