Disconnect and plug the vacuum lines to the distributor.

Rev engine to 3000 RPM

Set timing at 23 degrees Befire TDC

For some real fun set it at 50 degrees total advance.

Adds rotso horsepower.

Here's a more technical explanation, lol...

The marks are on the balancer and on a plastic orange pointer that is directly above it.

That is a lot of advance! I set mine at a total 37 degreees max. I blew a headgasket this summer after going on the Autobahn and Nürburgring. I think I might have gotten detonation without hearing it. Of course, it may also have been a coincidence...

I guess you have 8,5:1 compression? My car has 10:1, so you may get away with more advance because of that?

9.4:1. I run a slightly rich mixture on my shark with a free-flowing racing exhaust and run a can of techron through it a couple times a month. Havn't had any pinging/detonation problems at all.

But its something to be concerned with on the higher compression 928s, especially if the valves/chambers aren't kept clean, and especially in areas of the US where 93 pump gas isn't available.

At 10:1 on 91 octane i wouldn't go past about 35 degrees total advance.

Good advice for the Euro cars...like mine...I"m pushing that envelope already! Actually, I think the OEM is 36...but maybe thats OEM plus the 4 or so degrees that most folks recommend. I ballparked it this morning and you were right (referring to a different post) it did improve 2200-3000 rpm responsiveness somewhat. backsides of my valves were pretty yucky, hoping the steady diet of detergents I've had it on has cleaned that up somewhat.

Techron is IMO the best stuff on the market. That's what shops use when they pressure flush your Fuel injectors.

You can get it at pep boys, it's pretty pricey, but it works.

On 93 octane 40 degrees total advance should be safe on a 10:1 car, but of course when playing with ign timing you do so at your engines own risk, lol.

on my 84 part euro 5 liter with all US ignition, 23 degrees was max hp and 4 degrees further advance lost 4hp and gained 4 ftlbs of torque. i dont know what 50 degrees would do, probably just detonation
