Default Difference between Porsche OEM Windshield and aftermarket Safelitte GLass.

Is there a quality difference between an OEM Factory Windshield or an Aftemarket (Safelite) Windshield? How about Tint color?.

TIA

I don't know about 928 windshields but I do know that on 914's the only windshields that work correctly is either SIGLA or PPG , something to do with overall curvature . So I would assume the 928's may be in the same catagory? AL

Hiya Drewster,
I had mine replaced by Safelite about three years ago. They used SIGLA glass on mine. Additonally, the 86.5 has the radio antenna in the windshield, as does the replacement they used.
As far as tint color, the replacement has the dark green sun shade that runs across the top. I do not believe there is any other tint to the glass. I will double check in the morning to see if the glass has a greenish tint like the balance of the windows.
If you want any other specific info, let me know.

I think you are correct Derek, the front windshield, from what I can tell, does not have the green tint. I still have the org. in it.

NO DOUBT! After 6 or so months that Safelite glass is going to look like you drove it through a sandstorm car wash!

Thanks for the feedback and offer.

Im trying to go for the OEM stuff but it may look like I may have to settle for safelite. (Which isnt bad by any means). Huge diffenece in price. 447.15 for safelite - including labor - 1035.00 PLUS labor and parts for OEM. There HAS to be a reason other than Name Brand. Ive seen brand name mark ups but ........ C'Mon ..............So Im thinking its better quality. Or is it the Bavaria Beers Im drinking tonight?.

Tomorrow will tell.

What is THE cheapest windshield replacement? I'm going poor from building this race car, but I found a crack in my windshield today. Can anyone get one for me for cheap? Thanks

Default Yes they differ "BUT":

I have replaced windshield twice, once when first purchased the car and once from freeway debris thrown from a truck; anyhoo...

The first replacement was an aftermarket and did seem to pit too easily and wasn't exactly as wide and was opaque masked differently. That said it seemed OK and would still be in use if not for the accident.

The second replace is "Sigla" and is much better(the other oem is Sekurit).

The main reason I post this though is I got both thru the local "Auto Glass" installer and recommend you call around cuz if they have Sigla or Sekurit they only charged me $250 delivered and installed within 24 hours at my house, very awesome as list for original is over $1000 via dealer etc.

FWIW Good Luck!

I had the windshield replaced in my 83 when I first got it. Was under $200 installed at my house.

Default This is so Cool

OK long story short-

Insurance decide to go with "aftermarket glass" at the cost of around 500.00 - I argued against anything else but OEM, but had to settle for the 500.00 So..they cut me a check and mailed it to me. Vendor has been contacted and appointment set.

The day before the repair is to be done, Safelitte Auto glass calls me to say they cant find the glass anywhere for EXCEPT the dealer. At the cost of 1073.00 plus all the other BS which equals 1200.00 and some change.

Safellite tells me that I am resposible for the difference - I say - HELL NO - Insurance says full glass coverage - end of story - thats all she wrote -

So, Insurance carrier has no choice but to cut me another check for the difference.

Damn, 1200+ Change for a front windshield. Lucky Me I guess ...........

I am surprised that American motorists and insurances are putting up with all this frequend windshield damage and paint chips. To me, this is clearly caused by vehicles that do not cover their wheels and/or load properly - something totally and easily avoidable.

My idea of freedom does not include the right to damage or even wear other people's property. How come I never hear complaints about truckers and off-roaders that do this to our cars?

I agree with Nicole, I replaced 3 windshields 2 years ago, one in the 928, one in my sons car and one in a rental - so much crap on the roads being kicked up! My insurance company was great, no arguement on using Porsche glass.

Safelite did my glass for 250 or so installed. Didn't have the windshield antenna though. It's been a few months, a few long roadtrips, lots of pebbles at 100mph and not a nick.
