And then there is the issue of thrust bearing failure in the autos.

Default Look ma "NO HANDS"

In a manual I have and excuse for not answering my cell phone, eating or drinking in my ride, and best of all I don't have to hold hands with the other half.

All my cars are auto - changing gears is a waste of precious time. I would rather be driving.
This car was made for an auto box.
At 170mph on a 500/1000 mile cross country run why would you want a stick shift.
If you want to play "boy racers" go buy a 911 or boxster.

I've had both. I prefer the 5-spd for my driving style. Autos are nice for around town and cruising. I like to drive like a mad man sometimes and the Manual fits me better. Plus I feel I have more control of the car and can choose my shift points without a big clunk.

Do younger guys prefer the Manuals and old guys prefer the Autos.......

Never would I consider any time driving my 928 a waste, even while shifting...

Wouldn't a 5 speed get better gas mileage at cruising speed?

With the cost of fuel in Europe, that may be a consideration????

Pat's just kidding, his 'better' half is a sweetheart.

Not going to matter, you won't be shifting either very much.

"With the cost of fuel in Europe, that may be a consideration????"

If you can afford a 928 fuel costs would not be a consideration.

Not to hi-jack, but I checked my mileage yesterday when I filled up and I got about 17.5 MPG. This included a 200 mile interstate run, averaging 80-85. Not that it is or will ever be about MPG (it could be 5 and I'd drive it just as much). What's typical? TIA

I have both, an 85 manual and an 86.5 auto. My brother has an 83 auto. I prefer the manual any day over the auto. Autos are less fun to drive.

How can anyone think it’s a waste of time to shift? Why even bother driving, just get a limo and a driver.

You stick guys are so twitchy - maybe that's why you need a stick to "stir" the pot.

On a more serious note - I do personally prefer the auto, but can fully understand why you may prefer a stick. Each to there own.
In my case I drove my first stick 928 a couple of weeks back. I have to say the shifting was far from easy - heavy clutch - strange shift pattern - a little notchy.
No where near as smooth as my auto.
This was Jim's 928 and what a great car - just my opinion on the manual gearbox.

It now costs me £70 to fill my tank with premium fuel, that's about $125, NO JOKE. If I don't get to use the car outside London then I have to fill up again within about 200 miles.

Fuel is the one thing that stops me being able to afford to enjoy the car. My recent holiday around Europe cost $1200 in fuel, it was my biggest single cost, more than accommodation or meals out, or anything else.

I have spent more (one and a half times as much) on fuel since buying my car three and a half years ago than I spent buying the car itself.
