Default Why do manual cars sell for more?

Pretty new to the board. Just curious, why do the manual cars sell for more on the 928's. I see 87 / 88/ 89 / 90 modles where the manual shift cars seems higher price wise.

Does the manual shift cars add a premium and if so how much?

Thanks,

Supply and demand my friend! Manual transmissions are rarer than autos and lots of 928 groupies desire them.

Yes they demand a premium. Usually around 2k more and up for the really good examples with LSD. Just not as many manual transmissions as automatics.
Having both has been a pleasure. I enjoy my auto and have put it on the track with good results. But there is just something about manually shifting the 928 that is extremely pleasing.

There are a lot more automatics out there. There are a lot more people who would rather have a manual transmission in a high performance car. For example, I wouldn't buy an automatic 928.

About 80% of 928s had auto transmissions. The manuals tended to be driven harder and crashed more.

Simple case of supply and demand. They are more rare (On S4 on newer under 1/3 is 5sp) and most buyers prefer manual, if they can get it. Take two '87 S4's, all other identical exept gearbox I'd say there is $3K+ difference in price.

I had not idea that the manual was that much more. Wow, $2000-$3000.00 more. I guess the supply and deman issue really comes into play here.

Is the manual a faster car over-all? I would think a new clutch is very expensive and that with that in mind the value would have been the same or lower. Total opposite.

To really know what the differences are you really have to drive both. Preferably a good running example of each.

Most 928'ers prefer to pay more for a problematic 5 spd than a bullet proof AT...go figure!

By published factory performance figures, manual 928s are a hair faster than autos.

it's easy to find an ob manual... as years progressed they became rarer
as for faster.. I'd say so for starts, more so with an experienced driver
top end I think you'd see very little difference
if you're going to do DE or autocross you may want to spend the extra $$

Zero2sixty... the automatic trans has it's own share of $$ problems and many people feel that to be a sports car you must shift it yourself with a clutch . Basically if it is a weekend FUN car it should be FUN to drive an part of that may be clutching downshifting . The chase scene from Bullitt would not be the same without the engine and gearshifting sounds(even if they were dubbed in )

'If' you fry a clutch in a 928 it is one of the easiest procedures to do. And you don't get to use the word easy very often when discussing 928 repairs.

Unless I am missing some major past posts, the AT's biggest issues are leaky seals, BTDT. Manuals biggest issues are synchro's. I think seals are much cheaper and easier to replace...but what the hell do I know. I am not even considering the clutch, as it isn't part of the trans body.

They are both a blast to drive if you know how to work both. There are times I prefer one over the other...that is why I have both.

Pretty simple. Imagine for yourself ... a Porsche 911. Or, a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

Now .....

Imagine .... it with an auto gearbox.

It's not the performance. It's all about our perception .... what we've learnt since birth, as enthusiasts.
