It maybe a simple clock, is it possible that you have the polarity backward in terms of wiring? Seems to me a reverse current might make it tick backward...

Thanks Bill and Mike,
Bill, You are right. VDO used backwards movement to detect wrong polarity. Since digital clock did not count back on wrong polarity, I could not be sure whether back count was for normal or reverse polarity, until kind Mike's post. Thanks Mike for the clarification on the power/ground connections and on the connector's 2nd position being empty. I wanted to be sure there was no trick with new clocks to make them work. I guess this clock IS kaput!!
Mike - great looking car.
Thanks to all other for their input. You must feel that spending unrecoverable $200 (Porsche parts seller, advertising clock as new, is refusing to respond to make it right!!) for hardawre that does not work is cause for celebrations. Thanks.

Did you pay with a Visa card? Dispute the charge if so. Send a letter to Visa explaining the situation and that the clock is non-functional. They will give you a credit for the $200, most likely. I once dropped my digital camera into a bucket of soapy water, (don't ask how), and since I bought it with my Visa Card, Visa bought me a replacement.
