928 Starter help for a noobie...

Check the resistance and wiring as merlin has suggested. I'm sorry I have no idea on the solenoid part number. You will have the take the entire starter off no matter what for that job anyway. Hell I'd send you mine for small cash if I knew where it was. I think I packed it already (moving house)

Ok heres the update for my problem. I wacked the solenoid and starter a few times with a hammer and I got the engine to crank a few times, but not quite enough to get the old girl going... Though I did try another time turning it on while my headlights were on and my headlights went out so something is drawing power (it didn't crank when my headlights were on). 928 gods help me...

The headlights do turn off while cranking. Since it's a bad idea to crank with them on, they designed it to shut them off while cranking. Sounds like it's your solenoid or starter, since beating on those made them work. Best bet, pull it off and get it checked. You might be able to get away with just a solenoid, and that's a lot easier to replace with the whole starter unit on the bench. Also, it may work on some types of test stands but not under full load(attached to the engine).

Heres another update...
After alot of whacking at the starter and solenoid and cleaning as many contacts I can I got the car to click repeatedly when I turn the key... but still no turnover. I ordered a used starter and solenoid... but is that still the problem?

The battery I used this time was my old one, but it was charged and hooked up by jumper cables to my truck. I don't have a voltameter or any kind of advanced tools at hand...

Jersey- the starter solenoid can be rebuilt by a decent shop, but you'll find it far easier just to buy a new starter and not have to worry about it again. I bought a used starter from 928 International last year on the CHEAP and it works perfectly! Get some PB Blaster to loosen those nuts though- one of them is hard to get to as well. If you know someone with a lift this is an easy fix.

I agree with all of the above. I have an 85 auto and the starter was not a bad removal but I did have to lower the sway bar to clear. Definitly test before you replace, wiring is more likely the problem than the starter (or solenoid) but don't replace the motor just because you don't have a meter.
