Default Looking for old locks and keys

I'm looking for old door, hatch, gas cap, and glove box locks, broken or not. I would also like to find some keys that are no longer any use to anyone else. What I would like to do, is help some of our fellow Rennlisters out by providing a set of locks (albeit with only one key) in exchange for their old ones when they are replaced. This would be free for Rennlisters. I repeat, I am not looking to make money from this endeavor. Can anyone help me out? Would it be a worth while endeavor or in those immortal words from Jerry Jeff Walker: Just Pissin in the Wind?

If you need to duplicate any keys for your project I would like to help you. I can duplicate your keys on your blanks or supply the blanks for duplication. You pay for the blanks or supply your own ( Cutting N/C ) + Postage

With respect to gas caps - we have a few users here with broken locking pawls. I have a spare cap with a cracked one, so I thought I would experiment. I had a friend make up a block of carbon fibre & epoxy about right in 2 dimensions for a pawl. I have carved one usable pawl out so far, but designed for use without the spring that causes them to break. This means that the eccentric part at the end of the lock tumbler body pushes the teeth into egagement with the outer (unlocked), and retracts them (locked). This first one has meant i had to modify the end of the tumbler a bit to enable it to rotate 180* in a smaller space than before, but next time I will try to get it working without this mod, as it might weaken the end of the tumbler. I think if I filled the bottom of the tumbler with epoxy it would be ok.
So far the first pawl is 3 weeks into a field test, with no problems reported so far....

Anthony-
I have an old key which no longer matches anything on my car. Red one, not a security key. PM me your address, and I'll throw it in an envelope if you want it.

jpitman2,
Excellent thinking - yes the spring is a big part of that failure mechanism!

I agree this is a much better direction - however doesn't this disable the ratchet mechanism and make it either a fully engaged/locked with the cap in both directions (this is really the unlocked position) or fully disengaged postition (free rotating inner portion - locked position). I guess if you don't mind eliminating the over-tightening protection this still works OK? Is that what you are proposing?

I think making these in some volume would create a good opportunity for the big 3 to stock, or maybe Jager - Nicole! - new product idea?

Even @ say $40 each this is great price (and seller margin) considering the alternatives....don't ask how I know...

PS second idea to go with this - A tool that facilitates easy gas cap outer shell removal - a spider thing with 3 main prongs to act as spreaders for the cap cover around the inner portion. I know exactly how it should look - cheap plastic would work. Trying to replicate this with screwdrivers, putty knives etc is not so easy... again don't ask how I know....

Do you know how to re-key the lock cylinders to match a particular key? I would trade you some lock complete lock cylinders and several keys in excgange for 2 cylinders matched to my ignition key. Does this make any sense?

I agree, the gas cap outer shell can be a PITA!

Can the gas cap be easily rekeyed?

The outer shell on my cap has a chunk missing from it (PO probably dropped it on the ground), but other than that it still works fine. I'd like to replace it if it was relatively inexpensive/painless to do so.

Actually, the gas cap was the easiest lock to rekey. Getting the actual lock out is kinda of a pita because the outer shell has three lips on it that hold it in. There is very little room to pry out all three sides at once. Small screw drivers, putty knives and such will work. Try and avoid using anything with sharp edges, not to protect the cap though, to protect your hands when one of the three tools slip! (and they will)

You guys should see Eric's shop van ... looks like a combination of McGyver and the Mission Impossible Crew. He can cut some keys, that's for sure.

Cheers,
