Default I think I picked the wrong type car (rant)

I don't think the 928 is going to be for me.
This car is mechanicaly ( in my opinion ) perfect. Interior nice, not a crack in the Dash a little wear on the drivers seat. The body not a dent or ding, a paint job you could die for.

WHY. is there an electrical system from HELL. I fix on thing and it comes unwrapped the next day. New air compressor and dryer get the air blowing cold, 4 days later a melted fuse. Replaced the fuse now it blows hot air, & the radio quits?

I love to drive this car, I understand the mechanics, but the electric is something else. I could spend more time with my head under the dash than looking out the window. I just like to fix things once and have them stay fixed. I just thought my wife was high maintance. She does'nt hold a candle to this.

I have found the 928's electronics VERY simple, there's just alot of it. If you can wire up a car stereo, you should be able to do any 928 repair.

Try working on a 996 or 997, it's a dealer only car....

Well then go buy a Cobra or something Eric. It's your money- if the 928 isn't putting a smile on your face then buy a car that will. You only live once!

-My '85 was trouble all the time when I bought it too. 6 years later, I have a car that is reliable and only gives me enough trouble to interest me. Every once in a while a little problem crops up, and I have an excuse to spend an afternoon in the driveway with the tools. Perfect.

I'd tell you to hang in there, but it sounds like project cars aren't for you. Good luck!

that was a great link thank you. I noticed he said it did not resolve any issues, but gave him a secure foundation to work from.

Eric,

I was hoping to show you that it doesn't have to be intimidating. Disconnect your ground strap and dig in... wthin a few minutes you could have the reverse side of the panel visible to look for melted wires. You don't have to remove the harness connectors across the bottom to dismount the panel and rotate it forward. On your car, the main power wires may connect at the top center, in which case you would have to remove those.

The melted fuse that you reported does not bode well. Have a look at the back side of the panel. There are just a few common ground wires in there, and a problem with one can cause a whole assortment of various issues. While looking for a fuse panel to cannibalize, I found maybe two out of a stack of perhaps 30 panels that did not have melted wires and/or sockets. It's worth a look.

In reference to Dave's great article (dig into it):
Is this something you think those who own the 90-models should do as well? Just curious if I should dig-in and go through these steps for mine (as a preventative measure). I guess another way of asking - is this more of a problem with the slightly older age of the 70 & 80 models than the 90 models? Just curious...

It's a potential problem with any shark, especially if moisture has found its way in there. This can happen due to a clogged AC evaporator drain line, a clogged drain in the well where the HVAC blower & wiper motor live, a bad windshield seal, leaving the passenger window open in a rainstorm.... If the car has been a garage queen then it's less likely to be an issue.

While I don't recommend that everyone go out and do this, I do recommend that everyone at least inspect what they can see of their fuse panel and look for heat damage or corrosion. If you find either, I highly recommend you at least pull it out and inspect it. From there, it's your call.
