Ken, I've seen a car like that .... I was stripping the last usable part off it in a wrecking yard ... but I think it still had some insulation to lose before it could match your beast's nimbleness

The lightest 2 valve we have ever built a 928 racer is 2475, prior to paint. Post paint and body work, it weighted about 2550 with half a tank of gas.

That is with a full cage etc.

To further this discussion, I think that it is possible toget down to 2300 lbs using "most" of the stock chassis and body components. Will take quite a bit of work.

Ah, the cf dash - temping. I've been working with the body parts alot lately. The hatch could be lightened a bit. The bumper bar needs to be either totally changed or removed for serious (but unsafe if removed) weight savings.

The S4 will have all that kabash removed up in the sunroof area, but I still wanted some light if need be.

I couldn't ask for the doors to be lighter sans the glass, and the glass helps with sound reduction so...

I am trying for the easy-ish middle ground, with updating changes, and practicle "it didn't work anyway" removals. Like the headlight buckets were rusted beyond belief, so the headlights will be fixed. It took me days to remove all the damn tar crap, but it was about 75lbs worth it, including the fire wall stuff on the engine side (it will be replaced with much lighter stuff). I think 3000 pounds is a great goal for the early cars.

The rear interior quarters on the early cars are almost twice as heavy as the later car quarters. early being plastic and the later ones the fiber board - which is why they warp. Give and take. I will keep the headliner, and have actually covered it in carpet. I think this and the other raamat I will use throughout will really quiet the cabin. I have having the scream into the cell phone like I did with the 81 I had.

I always thought I wanted a loud car. Well it turns out I want a loud car when the windows are down at its above 4k. Otherwise I want, like, a slight burble without alot of racket. I bought my wife an acura MDX and it really changed my outlook on comfort vs fun - because technically, the MDX is faster then my original 924S that I worked so hard and long on, and its easier to drive. That may sound wierd - and I am really offtopic, but...

Carl sells the lighter starters.

Brendan as for the internal bumpers or bumper bar as you call it, just remove it, its a 30MPH impact bar as Jim Bailey once told me when i was doing my clockwork orange nose. For the carbon fiber dash complete it weighs 2.4 lbs with brackets according to my shipping scale. Dont let that guy from ebay fool you like he has done with everyone else. He sells the dash and gives you a good luck with mounting it since its just a cover when he sells it. You see he hasnt figured out how to mount it since one he doesnt have a 928 to trial fit and 2 it was my original dash he made the mold from and i took that back but unfortunaly he kept the mold and makes copies and sells them. The sunroof panel i got from this guy in Florida

Brendan,

I still have to make a form for the sunroof panel, before I can make more. I was thinking of using the same spot on the sunroofless '80 to get the perfect contour.

Your custom wiring harness should save a few pounds. All that copper adds up.

The bumpers and shocks are on my hit list too. I would like to have some aluminum tube replacements made.

I was looking at the dash that I took out of the '80, and was contemplating making a lighter frame, and covering that with a dash cap like (?)'s race car, then covering that with leather.

"I think 3000 pounds is a great goal for the early cars."

And an easily surpassable one at that. Should be able to achieve that without even losing the air or going into the interior.

Marc,
What parts of the chassis and body components can be made lighter?
I'm down to around 2630 (no fuel) and don't see were another 300lbs can be removed. Maybe another 50.
Willing to do the work to lose weight

2300?!??! maybe with some quality time with the plasma torch, but for those that don't want to cut anything up, not likely.

The '79 was weighed last year at 2750 after a race - low fuel, but with driver and gear.

Since then, fiberglass hatch, so should be at 2520 ish, with no driver.

JV - our cars should be about the same - take a look at the pics on the website to spot differences.
Notice I took the pod cover off - that thing weighs almost a lb. (vision is better without it, I like a low driving position...)

you reach a point where there is no easy weight left to take off, and then options are weight/cost related, ie. how much will this cost to lose x lbs? tube-framing sections, or finding lighter drive components. How about a titanium torque tube? That would be trick.

'79 Euro +/-
'80 SC +/-

I have a MyChron3 on my steering wheel, no 928 instruments at all!
I need to update my pictures. My problem is that the new motor will weigh a bit more in the future. Maybe hollow cam shafts and cutting off mounting ears on the block :O
