Default ABS light on, Speedo, odo, trip not working.... (FIXED)

The noise from the right rear was in fact a bad outer CV joint.

When I took the car for a test ride I noticed the speedo wasn't working. Additionally, the odometer, trip odometer and other digital display items especially the outside temp reading is all messed up. The display is still there and the odo reads 54046 and didn't change in the 2 mile trip to put gas in the car. I noticed it after filling the tank up and I went to set the trip to zero the mileage hadn't changed. Upon pulling out of the gas station I notice the needle on the speedo wasn't moving. Tach works, fuel gauge seems to work (although it didn't go all the way to the full mark), temp gauge appears to be working as does the oil pressure gauge.

Any ideas?

I'll bet the interior lights don't work either... Check fuse #24 (I believe) and see if it's blown. If so, you may have a short in the interior light circuitry... what fun!

Interior lights work.

had a similar thing happen on my '89 when the kickdown fuse blew.

Where is the kickdown fuse? Checked all the fuses in the panel and they are all good.

ABS light on?

Mine comes on after car is rolling. DR advised at SITM that if
ABS light comes on after startup, then it may be the ABS relay.
If light engages after it detects signal error (as in car rolling), then it's one
of the ABS sensors or loose connection at those plastic-can connectors.
The front sensors on the S4 were held on by 10mm? hex bolt.

Chuck, I'm guessing that it is your GTS (you didn't state which of your fleet). The newer cars get the speed pulses for the speedo/odo from the front right wheel speed sensor/tone ring. Also, if the ABS misses speed pulses from one of the sensors it triggers the fault light.

My guess is you have a bad connection, broken wire, defective sensor, or sensor with magnetic filings covering too much of the tip, or tone rings filled with crud. Start with checking all the connections on the front right and then move to the others.

Sorry Rich, it is the black 95 GTS. I have just changed the left rear drive shaft and did disconnect the ABS sensor on that wheel. Maybe it's the connection at that wheel. Perhaps I may have damaged the sensor trying to get it out of the wheel carrier when I thought the bearing was the issue. I left it in to have the bearing replaced and the carrier was heated to replace it. Could the heat have damaged the sensor?

I never got near the right front sensor. Would a damaged left rear sensor cause the speedo, odo and abs light to come on?

CZ;

My 93 5 spd did the same thing (for about 3 miles) upon first drive this year. Problem self corrected. Spanner tool didn't show faults (but I think the spanner is faulty itself...).
If you hit on a cure, let me know.

In 1992, the speedometer/odometer signal pickup was changed from the left front wheel to the left rear wheel.

If you are lucky, the sensor connection is faulty. If you are unlucky, the sensor is toast.

A repair kit is available if the sensor harness is damaged.

Guess me crankin on the sensor thinking I had to get it out due to the heat required to change the bearing was not a good thing. Do you supposed the heat damaged the sensor as it was left attached to the carrier while the wheel bearing was heated/changed?

BTW, I get a fault warning for PSD or ABS (can't remember which, I'll check) when I start the car.

Based on your comment about the fuel gage not going to full, that could very likely be the ignition switch.

Next time you take it for a ride and the speedo doesn't work, try jiggling the ignition key while you drive down the road.

Do the head lights fail to come up when the speedo doesn't work?

I'll try that. Don't know if the headlights are in-op while the speedo is in-op, I'll check that too.

Have a feeling Wally is on to the problem though as I was just working in that area.

Stupid, stupid me! Everything works again. Seems I didn't plug the ABS sensor wire in tight enough! Hey, I'm a rookie at this and allowed to make stupid mistakes like this one. Guess the faulty outside temp gauge reading is not related. Oh well, something else to look into. I did have the drivers mirror off so I'm sure something needs to be looked at here.

I did notice I have a sticky temp gauge though. Noticed it was showing a very low temp after driving for a while so I tapped on the pod and it moved up to where it should have been. Any fix for that..........?

Well, the collective wisdom of Rennisters comes to the rescue again. Thanks to Wally for the update on where the speedo pull's its pulse. Since Chuck didn't give the year of the 928 in question until later, I'll take partial credit for this.

By the time Chuck gets done with his fleet, he'll know the 928 from initial old boy to late GTS. Quite a span.
