According to the article,....."Porsche released early technical specifications and images today of its prototype that Penske Motorsports will field for the last two races of the 2005 ALMS season, Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta and the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in October, and all of the 2006 schedule."

So its going to run here in the USA in the ALMS race circuit, ... no mention of Le Mans but that might depend upon how well it does in the 8 months or so of racing up to that point & interest from private teams since that appears to be their desire as opposed to factory teams. I agree though, they need to have a car in the top classes at LeMans... Im tired of the Audis & Caddys & such, Porsche's racing history & tradition was built upon kicking a$$ at races such as LeMans & its too big a venue to only be in the lower GT classes for so long a time... 1998-2005 is long enough of a void!!

Amen to that, Mel!
I've been at the Le Mans race in '03 and '04, I really want to go there again, but have decided to not do so until those (mighty but boring) Audi's retire (which is now, yahoo!) and Porsche brings something more serious than a GT2. Hopefully some privateers will buy these new LMP2 cars!!

Great porsche enters an ALMS class where no one cares about who wins, except the winner. the cars are Junk.. may as well be privateer SCCA kit cars like the rebel (actually, the fastest Rebel has close to this porsche specs as far as hp to weight and looks similar).
The P2 class is just pylons for the ALMS P1 class (Audi R8, etc). Heck, they are usually slower than the top GT1 class (corvettes) I agree, what is this the under 4 literclass?? Porsche should either enter the P1 class or the GT1 , like the real top racing companies now! (ie audi, ferarri, corvette, austin Martin, etc)
they have proved their point in the GT2 class (old GT class using the GT3R 996s)
Now, they enter a class that is probably below the power to weight of the SCCA class for the Rebel?

Mark, it's a no lose situation. If the car isn't very good, they claim some wins in a class and go back to the drawing board. If the car kicks ***, they modify it for LMP1 and take on Audi. Either way, they are putting a car out there which is better than nothing.

No doubt they will rock P2, but its just a shame they are not, or didnt continue with P1, instead of making these cup cars so darn fast and ruin all the club racing with a car that kills everything!
wouldnt be a stretch for them to put a turbo car together and run GT1 against the corvettes like the old days. the privateers were running them and they were pretty fast in GTS back in 1999

Finally an effort from Porsche to get back to the top classes of racing with a factory effort for privately run race teams.
The interesting thing to me is the info about the engine.... "The Porsche prototype will be powered by a new 3.4-liter, 90 degree V8 engine. Able to produce 480 hp at 10,100 rpm.....". Maybe overall a bit but I think still worth mentioning to any 928er due to the new V-8 powerplant.
Imagine if you could get that into a Shark!

Is this the new Penske/Porsche racer for the ALMS?

The recent history of porsche seems to have shown the capabilities of them to build under class sport cars which is available to win the race all class.
Still, I don't know if it would be possible with this car.
