Default pulls to the right when upshifting(!)

Hi all,

I'm still working on sorting out the suspension.

I do have a steering rack bushing issue on the pass. side. Some slack there lets the pass. side front wheel do its own thing, like riding grooves in the road surface...

But I have adjusted rear ride height from 200/210mm L/R to 160/163mm. Wow, thats a lot. This has improved traction some.

But now the car feels like it it is not properly aligned anymore. When I break traction going straight (in the rain, mostly), it will always kick the tail out to one side ( the same side every time).

And when I accelerate at WOT it will go straight, but as the front dives when I go off the pedal to upshift, the car turns right. Enough to scare me.

This behaviour is new. The loose rack bushing has been like this all the time, but this behaviour came after lowering the rear end.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the rear toe setting your rear wheels may not be pointing the same direction.

will do, thanks Jim!

I was basically looking for some advice on where to start looking, and I got it.

How about corner balancing? Is this an issue with our cars?

As it is now the drivers side is a few mms lower, should it be higher to compensate for my weight?

Gruffalo, When ever you touch the ride height you automatically need a new wheel alignment. When I had a slight turn issue in a dive it turned out to be a dead strut. Your first course of action is to get that ride height right where you want it and then get a wheel alignment. No fly by night places either. Then if your problem persists then you go to the next level. Basically what Jim said longer winded.

Re-torque on the lower strut mounts in the rear. I had one that was tight but not torqued, causing the car to rotate left under accelaration and rotate to the right on lift off. Never would have guessed the problem, but Wally P. nailed it.

atb: very interesting! Do you mean "the long bolt"?

Dindn't know that this would have an effect. But I'll check it out.

Another thing along the same path is that I didn't fit all the washers correctly on noe side. After reading your experience I'll have to fix that.

What is actually the correct torque for the nut on the long pivot bolt that runs through the low end of the shock?

Bingo!

That will definitely cause your problem.

one tire with less air could do this, also a differernt tire on the one side can do this too.
sounds like it could be the toe, as its ok under accel, and turning under decel.

It turned out that I had fitted both conical washers on one side of the wheel carrier, and none on the other. (I must have been under the influence or something...) The steel pipe inside the outer bushing had started eating its way into the aluminm wheel carrier. Very ugly indeed! I had to grind off the aluminum to shape a new conical mating surface for the washer, and I re torqued both sides to 140Nm.

Problem solved. Handling back to normal.

Man, I have to more attention when working on the car, maybe get more sleep or something. My three year old was helping me at the time I suddenly rememberd, let's blame him. That sounds fair.
