You may want to check your mirrors.

You may want to check your mirrors.
I was driving along on the freeway this afternoon and I heard a little noise that sounded like I kicked up a small rock. I didn't think much of it until I started to change lanes. I look in my driver's side mirror and I can't see things that are behind me, just a gray color where my mirror glass used to be!
It was gray and wavy and looked like the glass had suddenly burned so of course I freaked out and pulled off at the exit to see what happened. When I touched the plastic I realized the glass had just fallen out.
You may want to check your mirrors and make sure the 20 year old glue is still holding. It's $73 each mirror for just the glass so it may be worth a little time.

It happened to me too, except I noticed something odd when pulling out of the driveway. When I touched the driver side mirror it moved. I was able to remove the mirror with my finger nails. considered myself lucky for not loosing the mirror. After some application of white glue ( that's all I could find in a hurry) it went back on and is still there 2 years later!

I lost my driver's side on my 86.5' in a funny way. My oldest son used to slam the 928's doors when he got in or out. We got back in the car after a trip to the local remote controlled toy store and he slammed the passenger's door again. My driver's side mirror popped out and shattered on the ground. I just sat there and looked at him. He doesn't slam the doors anymore!

Mine fell off too. I was sitting at a light and when I started to go I heard a noise and saw out of my periphial vision a flash go by. I too then looked into the mirror (that wasnt there) and saw only gray. It sucked but turned out it was fairly easy to replace. While you are waiting for a replacement, Pep boys carries mirrors you can stick on there until the real one comes in.

Funny story -
I was rolling down the freeway and noticed my passenger side mirror appeared to be hanging on only by the top - rocking back and forth. Pulled off the freeway and it practically fell off into my hand. Good timing on the story, and probably worthwhile to do a check on the mirrors.

Must be common - I started a similar thread last weekend:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/209603-mirror-fell-off.html
I was lucky. When my mirror fell off most of it was in 2 large pieces. A little contact cement and it's at least functional until I feel like coughing up the $$$ for a new one.
I checked my newly acquired workshop manual it it basically said to pry the mirror off with a putty knife, but it didn't say where or how. After a little trial and error I managed to get the thing apart, and after a little more practice figured out how to put it back together - sort of. It doesn't look like it's meant to be taken apart, which may be a good thing. Again the manual wasn't much help. The instructions for reassembly are bascically to 'reverse the process' used to disassemble it. How do you 'unpry' something??? Maybe I'll get some pictures tonight.
I sure hope for $64.01 the mirror is more than just the glass!!!

Edit:
Come to think of it - I don't remember a hole in the bottom of my mirror that would let me get at the slots in the locking ring. I have a VERY early '87 - #142 / Aug '86 build. I wonder if they hadn't transitioned to the new housing yet? Either that or I'm just not very observant!!!

I found a replacement at Automotion that is convex enough to take out the blind spot for $39. Nice since I already use the small convex mirrors at the end (probably the extra little weight that made the mirror fall off), but I'd rather get it from one of the Big 3 if they have it at close to the same price. I looked around and couldn't find it, but I'm sometimes not the brightest bulb in the bunch, so has anybody seen this at any of the Big 3?
