Default Mirror fell off

I was driving around town last weekend and heard what sounded like breaking glass. I pulled over immediately and noticed that the mirror glass had fallen off the driver's side mirror! Amazingly when it hit the street it broke cleanly into just 2 pieces. I'm thinking I'll just try to glue them back on, but with some type of glue that comes off easily so when I get a replacement I can get it off easily. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm feeling a bit cursed at the moment. My '94 Villager is having problems with sticky brake calipers, my '00 Audi S4 has what appears to be a bad wheel bearing, and now this. Fortunately my '91 Honda Accord is still running strong and still getting 32mpg on my daily 60 mile round trip to work and back!

Bill,
Are you saying that the glass just fell off the backing plate and broke into two pieces? or did the glass and backing plate both come off?

If the glass came off the backing plate just glue it back on since the replacement glass should have the backing plate already attached - don't get glue into the rotating lock ring behind the backing plate though it will be a real pain to get it all out. One of the big 3 can probably get you a replacement in a few days - might be best to wait... just hold off driving it or put preventative Flex All on your neck!

Alan-
Bill doesn't have the GTS mirrors. The flag mirros are different. But having said that, Bill, now's the time to get the approval for the $500 upgrade to the aero mirros!
If the glass spearated from the heating element, you should be able to get a mirror cut from a auto glass shop to fit... my guess is $30 or less. If the heating element broke with the glass you will have to replace both, but go ahead and glue it as there's no way to salvage the heating element. I'm sure there's plenty used ones floating around. The only reason I'm holding onto mine is in case I decide to upgrade the car the GTS mirrors are coming with me.

It was just the glass - the backing plate is still there. The heating element is trashed, but I don't think I've ever used it anyway.

I actually like the mirrors I have, so I'll just get it fixed. A new one is about $50 - it has a 944 part number, so I may be able to get one from there, but it's not that expensive, especially compared to most other 928 parts!!!

The car is parked until I get it fixed one way or the other. It was really strange driving it home - I kept looking at the mirror and just seeing a piece of black plastic! I actually planned my route home based on the least need to use that mirror - no lane changes that could be avoided.

Auto parts stores sell high temp mirror glue for just that application if you want a temporary fix before replacing it.

Funny thing...... the mirror on my '86 car just did the same thing. I closed the door, and the glass part just fell onto the ground. Of course I was parked on soft, sandy soil. No, it didn't survive the fall! To all outward appearances, the glue simply failed. Interestingly, the mirror is reflective on BOTH sides!

They do this if they aren't secured with the locking rim from underneath the mirror housing after installation. I have some spare somewhere, 25 bucks shipping included each ..... I just need to dig them out. Let me know and I'll search for one.

Good thing is,, my GTS mirrors get painted today. Good excuse for an upgrade

I had the problem too. My power mirror fuse had blown and i was sitting at a red light in front of an SUV, so naturally, I was blinded. I reached out the window and pushed the mirror upwards so i could see and the second i touched it, it fell off, right in the street. It broke into a million pieces. The light turned green, I said goodbye to the mirror that had been with the car for 16 years and went home. I bought a new mirror off ebay, and even though it was supposed to fit my car, it didn't, so I sent it back. Out of nowhere I got a new one in the mail from my mom who said she was in Belmont and stopped by Devek and picked one up for me. How nice of her.

Bill, if you glue the old mirror back on you may want to try adding one of these to your mirror. I have those stupid looking bubbles on my auto trans car, but I think for the manual/track car I am going to invest in these Multivex Mirrors. Here is the web site: http://www.safetymirrorsonline.com/html/home.htm. They are local (6220 Burton, Romulus Mi). I was thinking of making a run down there and picking up a set. Let me know if you are interested.

Wow! That's a great find! For those that need replacement GTS mirrors it's a bargain. Only $30 ea. vs. $70. Doubt that it includes the mounting hardware, but still a bargain if you ask me.

I have the little bubbles on my car and can't stand them. Maybe I just didn't have time to get used to them, but the extra movement I see distracts more than it helps.

BTW a little off topic, but what is that on the right side of that site listed as SUV???

The wide-angle lenses take some getting use to, but if you are into fast lane changes or track events they are a must. I resurfaced the side of an old Fiat X-19 many years ago due to the blind spot. I have had them on all my cars ever since. If I am not mistaken, the Multivex lenses just stick to your original mirror.
