Default Clicking noise from left rear wheel

Last week when I drove the black GTS onto the lift in the garage I noticed a loud clicking noise coming from the area of the left rear wheel. It made the noise at the same point each time the wheel rotated moving forward or in reverse.

Last night after I finished putting the car back together, I took it for a spin around the block and it was making the same noise while backing it out of the garage and also made the same noise at slow speeds while no or very little power was added. It stopped making the noise when more power was added but returned while slowing down or and remained at lower speeds.

Best comparison I could come up with on what the noise sounds like is, it sounds like a rock in the tread only MUCH louder and with a more metallic sound. Caliper problem? Half shaft CV joint? Wheel bearing? Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated?

Get it on the lift and put it in gear and go check it. I do it all the time. I have CV's if you end up needing one. 100.00 plus shipping.

I had a very similiar noise issue once with my kinesis wheels at the drivers front. Perplexing until I raised the car, turned the wheel by hand and found the noise was coming from within the wheel. After I had the tire removed it was found the inside nut from the wheel air valve had broken off and was pinging around at slow speeds. Tire held air but would leak down a bit faster than the others.

Hope that helps,
Constantine

When you here the noise again, slowly pull up on teh parking brake handle. See if it disappears..changes?. Many forget that the P-brake is under the rotor hat on the back.

I would next check to see if the CV joint bolts to see if they were simply loose. I don't think it would be the first one I heard of this happing.

Guys,

This is why I really love this forum! Thanks for all the suggestions for things to look at. The car is on the lift now and I will get chance to look at next week. I'll update when I figure out exactly what the problem turns out to be.

I put the rear end on jack stands on the lift, ran the car at idle with and without the parking brake slightly engaged. It makes a horribly loud almost constant cracking/popping metallic sort of noise while the wheel is turning either with or without the parking brake.

I guess its hard to say if its the parking brake spring or the CV joint for sure without taking things apart. The CV joint boot is in really good shape with not leaks or tears. The half shaft has no noticeable play which I guess it might if it were loose and it's definitely not something inside the wheel.

Did you pull the brake caliper/rotor and check everything there?......that would be the next step. If you find nothing there, it could be a bad wheel bearing.

Not yet. Will do that next. If it were a wheel bearing, would there be any side to side play as I push and pull on the wheel while the rear end is off the ground?

The noise seems to be originating from the area near the boot at the hub:

the parking brake spring sometimes comes detached and the spring gets ground up or hits somthing for that once around clicking. what you are now talking about sounds more serious, but if is a click once a revolution, it could be a detached spring that has the end hook ground down my now.

easy to see. pull a wheel , remove the rear brake calipers (two bolts) remove disc , look inside!

I have the wheel and caliper off and am struggling with the rotor. I am very much a rookie at working on the 928 but when I took the 78 rear wheel assembly apart the rotor came off after removing the couple screws that held it in place. The GTS has the additional rear spacer with two screws that appear to hold it in place. Is there anything else holding the rotor in place other than these two screws or is it just rusted tight?

Chuck you have to realese the parking brake otherwise it will won't come off. Also you should see an inspection hole where you can adjust the parking brake. Back it off a few clicks if you still can't get it off.
