Talking Road Trip

Left Nashville yesterday afternoon, gassed up and headed to Knoxville. Drove @ 130 miles pulled into a rest area and upon returning, the car would not start and the infamous red light came on. Car would turn over but did not seem to be getting gas, gas gage read @ 1/2 tank. OK I am prepared for this ( I Think ) pulled out a new fule pump relay and pluged it in. NO Go.
After bumping the switch a few more times the low fuel light came on, SH!X I'm out of gas. Called a wrecker to bring some fuel, this turns out to cost @ $25.00 per gallon delivered.

While I'm waiting decided to fasten up the fuse box panel and straighten out carpet. put the key on the seat and went around the car to get a screwdriver, the door shut and the car locked itself up ( guess there is a malfunction in the electric lock, you think ) of course now i am locked out.
Called a local locksmith and asked him if he had a opening tool for a porsche, he said whats that. I said its a wire bent in about a 2" circle with an offset handle. No I have a Slim Jim, and some tool that I have no idea what they are used for.
To make a long story short I made a tool to open the car, The car still would not start with $50.00 worth of gas 2 gal. I am a guest of Holiday Inn. Well the wrecker is comming this morning and I will be back in Nashville soon.

Happy Motoring
Eric

Eric -
Please post the year of your car - it will assist us all in helping to troublehoot.

As to the locks....THESE ARE FULL OF GREMLINS!
As you have learned...NEVER, EVER, EVER close a door with the key in the car!
You are not the first (or 50th!) to find out about this little fun!
NOW - There have been many posts about unlocking with a 'tool'....could you please share your secret?

I think you should consider what the red alert is saying. Why does it sy you're out of fuel? Or is there something else wrong? Are all warning lights operational when you first turn the key to the on position? Maybe without fuel she ran dry and needs to get the fuel to the engine. Do you smell fuel on cranking?

Well I assumed ( ***-u-me ) the red light ment an electrical problem, so I changed the relay. The light that came on, that said it was out of fuel was the yellow triangle on the fuel gage, so I added fuel. Maybe not enough? I kept bumping the ingition, trying to convince the fuel pump to send the fuel to the engine. SOO. mabye the fuel pump is not working? No I dont smell fuel
I am willing to learn, any advice is appriciated

Although I don't like to make practice of it but shoot some engine stat in the trumpet tube. If there is spark then it will fire up. Whether it stays running is a different story. The low fuel light will make the big red light go on. Get a fuel tank in the car. I would bet you may have a dead fuel pump. if that relay is good. Do you here the buzzing when you turn the key?

After locking my keys in my car twice in one weekend (and at least a dozen other times), I learned to never put my keys anywhere except in my pocket or hanging on the hook where they live, even if the windows are open.

Check the fuse for the fuel pump relay.

Good Luck

I agree with Joe's suggestion as well.

To test fuel pump operation - turn the ignition key just enough to 'bump' the starter. Let the key return to the '2' position. Immediately after the momentary starter engagement, you should hear a buzzing noise from the right rear of the car - the sound of the fuel pump energizing.

I agree that you should check the fuel pump. If you ran low on fuel, you may have sucked crud on the bottom of the tank into the pump. If the pump seems ceased, try reversing the polarity (WITH THE INLET OPEN) so that whatever is caught in there can be spet back out of the system, and not back into the tank. Now if you're successful consider yourself lucky and make sure you clean that tank out thoroughly (see nichols site) when you get home

I tried to add a direct link to 928 Specialists' fuse/relay diagram for your model year, but darned if I can't find it on the new layout of their site.

Someone else want to try to locate it for him?

I can't get a link to the fuse chart either, but 85-86 chart shows the fuse to be # 42 and should be 15 amps. If you go to 928 specialist site, <www.928gt.com> click enter and then look on the left hand frame, you should see about half way down, a link for the fuse and relay charts.
Cheers

Locksmith... also, don't forget the ignition and
jetronic relays (# XVI & XXV; fuel pump=XX).

Last year at Sharktoberfest, at the end of the
fun-run, an '85 was dead until we swapped the
ignition relay (XVI).

G'luck.
