Question Charcoal Cannister

Can anyone tell me how often the charcoal cannister needs to be replaced? I don't necessarily have a problem, but I'm going to replace the "Y" connector with a stainless steel upgrade received from Dave Chamberlain and just wondering about a "while you're in there" item. I've searched but can't find a thread specifically addressing the frequency and/or need to replace. Anyone want to put in $0.02? Thanks.

Nope, just know that with a check for $21.50, one was delivered to me via snail mail; even before my check was cashed!

the charcoal cannister collects fuel vapors from the fuel tank but is then purged by having some intake vacuum pull air/vapors from the cannistor after the engine is warm and under certain operating conditions. There is no replacement schedule that I am aware of.

Thanks Jim,
As I said, I just wanted to know if it was one of those "while you're at it" maintenance items. I'm sure there are plenty of other items that would be more pressing, but I'm trying to do all I can within the limits of my mechanical ability; I think this would be one of those items.

I've got a gas smell in the engine compartment after shutting down. Gas lines are not leaking. Where is the charcoal cannister located. The connections to it may be leaking?

Hi Don, the y connector and the charcoal cannister are both in the top rear area of the right front wheel well, depending on your model/yr you will have to remove the wheel well liner first to see the part. Also if you have noot already done so I would remove all of the fuel lines in the engine compartment and have new lines put on your original hard pipes and fittings, Stan

Thanks Don T and Mrmerlin. I have a black 87 5 speed that I just traded for my old 87 silver automatic. I have looked all over for the cannister, but not under the fender. Dr. Porsche puts stuff in sgtrange places.
