Default Camera mounting locations?

Hey all.

I have a Cannon Digital Elph SD300 camera. It takes GREAT video for a little camera. I have a 1GB SD card that will allow me to take uptp 2 hrs on low res setting, but a respectable 30min at 320x240 @ 30fps. I was hoping to hook it up in my car and take some BRP video while at SITM.

My question is where is the best place to mount this thing? Any suggestions?

Unless you have a remote, suction cups on the windshield seem like they'd be best for controlling it. For best view, I'd say just over your right shoulder (driver perspective) or under the bumper.

Thought about the bumper thing, but I can envision a pebble taking out the lens, so that's out of the questions. I thought about a suction cup mount that screws into the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera. Anyone make such a thing? Played around with the visor, but it's not stable enough.

I think I'll try rubber banding it to the passenger head rest. I'll let you know what I come up with.

I've seen the suction cup moutns before, but I can't remember exactly where. I'd bet B&H has them, but getting one to you before friday would be a PITA. Try a local camera store. Maybe you could modify a radar detector mount to work. An Elph weighs about the same as a radar detector.

Thanks Matt. Don't know if I'll have time for SITM, but I'll check it out for the future.

If you do a search on SITM pics of the past, you will see my camera/camcorder setup mounted on the front bumber. Works great but not something you can rig together quickly. Takes some fabrication and specialty hardware to keep it stable but also adjustable. Sorry I don't have a pic of it..but many others do

Andrew - I will probably have a video camera mounted in my car. Basically my setup is a small tripod situated over the trans hump and secured to the car using 3 cargo straps. Its rock stable. The camera shoots between the seats. I use a wideangle lens to get past the rearview mirror. I have a video posted using this setup in the SITM caravan thread at the top.

Andrew, the only issue you may have shooting through the windscreen is to do with auto focus. You may have to manualy set it . Most auto focus video cams use IR technology...just thought I'd mention this...Bill

Thanks. Bill! The more I think about it, the better I like my idea od rubber binding it to the pass. headrest. That way I can take it down and hide any potentially incriminating evidence! Less than 2 hours till GO time.

Have you considered making a helmet mount? I know that is not the most comfortable choice and you'll look like a dork, but you get great first person video (including glances at the speedo ).
