Default Compare 928 to current cars...

I am not only a shark owner, but an 8th grade teacher. When I drive my 1983 to school the kids seem intrigued and ask a lot of questions...

How fast does it go?
Can you beat a Corvette? etc. etc.
Are you going to paint it or leave it that ugly copper color?

I try to tell them it was very fast for its day.
I would like to find away to compare the car to a car of today. I guess I am asking help in finishing this sentence...

The 928 is to 1983 as the (fill in the blank) is to 2005.

Thanks for any responses.

The new Aston Martin V8 - there were always Corvettes, and the 928 was a lot more expensive and refined than a Corvette.

put it in perspective. GRAND AM cup runs all the latest supercars (except vet and viper) so, new 5 liter crate engine mustang, porsche 996, M3, firebirds with the 405vet engine, and even the caddie CTSV. With almost idential mods, (set of headers and lightened) the 928 from 1987 is turning times equivilant to most all of the above, and with the worlds best drivers driving them!!!!. EVEN THOUGH it is 20 years older!!!!!! absolutely stunning technology!
so, when someone asks you what compares to a 928 of 20 years ago, you can say the new vets are only a slight step ahead, and the viper is simply the best. (ie even at 450hp stock, and especially now at 500hp)

now, if you go back to 1983, and you talk euro, well, maybe a notch back, and if you are talking a US 1983 like i think you are, as was said, a vet with the old 240hp engine of the late 80s is about right. better to compare that kind of car to the high performance mercedes and jag of the day.
the euro '83 928 was 300hp while the euro 84 928 was 310hp !!! however the US cars of the year were a little down sized on power!

Tell 'em to rent Weird Science, that'll give 'em a good idea (you might get in trouble reccomending Risky Business).

I was going to write that you should tell them that Al Pacino and Tom Cruise has been driving 928's.. But they are probably to you - but hey, Britney Spears drove one in one of her videos.

Or you could just say that they were designed to compete with airlines for fast travelling.

Tell them how fast it is and tell them the nickname for 928s is the german corvette. then tell them it'll do 190 with a supercharger but you think that would be showing off. Then tell them that you once raced a 500 HP viper on the track and beat it. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket. It's a Porsha should be enough, although they did race them at Le Mans, and it was the fastest production car in the world and and... Fast enough to make me pee MY pants. Did I mention that I built it myself? Keep a picture of Jon's race car in your wallet... When you're older, maybe I'll take you for a ride. GOOD LUCK !!!

2005 BWM 645i minus 1000 pounds equals 928 after the 928 has been beaten with an ugly stick.

(To clarify, the 6-series has the same mission as the 928. But, the new 6 is fat AND ugly...)

Although not comparing to new cars-

The European spec 928 for 1983 was the fastest production car available in the world at 157mph. At ~ $50,000 it cost more than double what a Corvette would have cost, had Chevrolet sold one that year. However they didn't because of production delays of the C4 version. That 'Vette debuted in March of 1983 as an '84. It was all-new, sure, but I think GM's track record with first model year cars, well...can you say "Snap, Crackle, and Pop?" That 'Vette had 205 screaming horses and cost $21,800, replacing the "Gawd, how can they still be selling these abominations" C3, or Mako Shark bodied model of 1982, ending a 14 year run for that car.

In 1983 the dark age of performance cars was ending but the industry had yet to respond with anything vaguely desirable. Ferrari had , what? the 308?
Magnum P.I. drove one those instead of a 928 only because the removable roof panel made it more telegenic (yes, telegenic)

I'm not bias or nothing, but it's no idle boast to call the '83 928 the best car in the world when it was built.

Hey Alex, Chevy did sell Corvettes in 83. They were the 82 collector edition to feature the ( ever big impressive) pop up rear hatch, the bronze t-top, and the special paint color. Turbine wheels also. I think only 11k were made.

Sure, there were Corvettes in the showrooms at the time, but none ever bore a 1983 model year designation. That point was mostly a jab at GM's ambivilance toward anything outside itself.
