Default clutch pedal engaging point

Another newbie question - my car is an 86.5, and the clutch engages at about 2/3 - 3/4 of pedal travel off the floor. Is this normal? If possible I'd like to get it adjusted so it engages at about 1/3.

How many miles are on it? I just replaced my clutch plate at 100K miles. It had more travel before it was replaced, but once I got the new one in it engages about 1/2 way up, maybe a little less. My clutch would slip a little when going up a steep hill from a dead start before I replaced it so it was pretty worn.

Another thing that can help is bleeding the system. I just did mine because of a bubble that was created when I had the slave cylinder out for so long doing the clutch and TB/WP. I also wanted a maintenance point to start from with the fluids. The PO must have never done it because the fluid was milky and almost black. I haven't driven it yet since I finished bleeding the brakes too last night, but it feels nice and stiff again so it should disengage/engage much earlier so the pedal doesn't have to travel so far.

I'll know better tonight when I take it down and drive. I'll pay close attention to it and let you know how it is.

The clevis (the squarish block of metal) which attaches to the clutch pedal and screws onto the metal rod which goes into the master cylinder does allow some adjustment of where the clutch pedal engages but hydraulic systems are designed to self compensate for wear to a large extent simply by changing the amount of brake fluid between the master cylinder and slave cylinder. The brake pedal also has a clevis and height is easily adjusted so the brake pedal rides closer to the heigth of the accelerator pedal which makes braking and simultaneously blipping the gas easier to do.

The car only has 46,500 miles on it, so I can't imagine it's wear-related. It's in the shop right now for TB/WP, and all new fluids including brake fluid which probably hasn't been changed in several years. Maybe it will be better when I get it back.

Thanks for the info.

Got the shark back on the road after bleeding the clutch and brakes. The clutch still engages a little before half way up, but it's much easier to push with the new fluid. I might try the adjustment Jim mentioned this weekend to see what it does.

John, do let us know how it works out. Maybe I'll attempt it too.

another thread back from dead as I search some of my issues.

I have an 81 5 spd with 55K miles. my clutch engagement is right near the top of the pedal travel. the pedal is moderately hard, but smooth travel, no sticking or noises. I have no service history on the clutch. very good chance old fluid. But I would like to get the engagement point closer to the middle, as a smooth clutch engagement is difficult when the point is so high.

what is the available adjustment other than replacing fluid? I also get a little chatter when the clutch starts to grab ( car still, in 1st or reverse gear)
