I'm thinking about tinting so I don't have to use a cover all the time or put more than just the front window shield in all of the windows constantly to keep the interior from fading and drying out.

Has anyone done it yourself? I've done it before on another car and liked the results, just wondering if someone else has done this to a 928, especially the rear hatch window. Also, what tinting is available for a DIYer that comes in a size big enough to do the rear hatch with one sheet?

I dunno, Ive put monocote on many a Model Airplane and i will still leave window tinting to the Pros.
Id rather them deal with the quarter glass than me.

I wouldn't even attempt to do it myself, maybe if I had a $500 truck or something.

Also its relatively inexpensive, cost me around $170 for the 3M, I did however have the rear quarters done with the glass out of the car and I removed the door panels. All that saved cost.

Leave it to the pros. I had my 87 done and they did an outstanding job.

I had to remove a "harry homeowner" job from my 88 because of the lousy job he did before I bought it. The quarter windows appeared to even be a PITA to the pro's who did my 87.

I did it on my 993, but I wouldn't do it again. Take my word for it... it's not worth the time if you want it to look good.

Chris what is the max allowable tint for Washington? Not that I really care since my plates say I'm from Alaska but this trip around I'll have it done to the 5sp, and I assume what the glass shops will have available will be the max the state allows.

You know I can't remember, 32% ?? I just asked for the max and its plenty dark enough.

Note WA law applies to out of state vehicles ... although the unmarked state patrol vehicles do not seem to comply.

if you ever applied big(ish) stickers on a car using a squeegy and soapy water you should be able to do it. On windows with extreme curvature you use a heat gun to "mold" the film. The 928 however, has relatively flat windows, so it should be easy, but i've never done one.

They are so called market leaders and should have distributors in your area. Avoid cheap film, they scratch easy if dust get between the weather strip and the window, making it look 2nd hand and crappy in no time.

No problem. So, are you guys saying I should let the pros do it? I guess I'll start looking around for a place close by. I'll check on the film they use. We're going to Miami next month so I'd like to have it done before then.

I just had mine done last month by the local shop that does most of the high end car dealers, including Porsche & BMW here. They did an awesome job. They also did my BMW 325 a few months back. Cost me $170 for my 928, including the 4" strip on the windshield. Well worth it here in the Sunshine State! I'm with those who've said leave it to the pros, unless you are really good at it. The rear quarter windows even caused the guys I used to squirm a bit!

I had mine done last year with 3M stuff, and they did the rear hatch in one piece, so dont settle for less. Well worth it (full white interior!), but let the pros do it.
