No crank on '84 euro
I have found a '84 Euro with the 300 hp 4.7L engine. It is a 5-speed. It was running fine, then all of a sudden the engine will not even crank. The battery is fine. The car is owned by a dealer and wants to get rid of it. It has 90K miles. What would this thing go for? I am worried about buying something that will not start.
What possibilities are there for the no start condition?
Can I bypass the starter switch? What about a start relay?
Thanks
Mike

Mike, be careful. A Euro with a dead engine is only ha;f a Euro, and buying the engine to replace will cost you a lot. What to pay ... very hard to say, but ignore that it's a Euro and pay as you would for any car in its shape.

wont crank, wont start? which?
its running and then it dies, sounds like fuel. put a bridge on the fuel pump relay and see if it runs. then try to start it if it does make the pump buzzzz with the bridge.
check brain connections,
see if you are getting spark.
If you got spark, and you short the fuel pump relay, it should run. If it doesnt, could be other things, that i cant offer suggestions for, but others can im sure.

Mark,
Sorry for not being clear. It will not crank. You turn the key and nothing. That is why I was wanting to bypass the starter somehow, that would narrow it down to the ignition switch or the starter itself.
Any suggestions?

could have a bad connection on the battery, or the starter relay is bad, also you can put a screwdriver across the starter terminals and see if the startersolinoid is working. If that works you have an ignition switch and associate relays issue. sounds like its kind of minor.

OK, OK,
Let me rephrase the whole question. I talked with the salesman at the dealership and he said it would not crank, now the manager said it would not start. So now it cranks, but does not start. The TB and numerous other things have been changed within the last 3 months by a good shop that I know of.
The dealership (small town) has it at a local shop now that doesn't have a clue. He thinks it is a brain which according to him is $1400, or it could be the security system. The security system has a keypad located in the glovebox. I have not heard of one like this. The mechanic wants $500 to disable it. The manager told me he had $6200 in it right now plus whatever this guy is going to charge.
What is the best way to check if the motor is good, compression test? Would the motor turn over freely if the TB failed?
How about the fuel pump relay? I am used to the S4, where the FP relay is the same as several others and you can pop one out and check it with another. Is that the same case with this one?
What else can I check? Would $6200 be a good price? The color is burgundy and is a very clean car.
Thanks

With it not running I think there's way too many unknowns to make it worth even close to that. Sure, you can do a compression check, but what about the clutch and tranny?

I think I'd not pay that, unless the car were running (assuming it has other needs also). Truthfully the car is worth that, but the market is not really good these days for a non-running 928.

What if it was running? If I were to narrow it down to a $15 relay, wouldn;t it be worth it? The PO just had about $3K in the car 3 months ago. A shop in St. Louis did it. I know these guys and they are quite good.
What does a good condition, good running '84 Euro with the 300 horse engine with 90K miles go for these days?
Thanks
