Default Engine R&R questions

I have a question about removing and replang the motor in my car.

The motor in my avatar has new wiring harnesses and is pretty much 'plug and play' A couple of the utility items would need transfered, but other than that, out and in.

As a guesstimate what do you think would be the shop time and cost for the job?

LOL...Don't ask me. I started in October.

Why are you replacing it?

I hope we are talking about a good 928 shop and not a Porsche dealer?

we did scots recently with the euro 4.7 replacement. i did all the prep work. dropped the headers and mufflers, clutch, loosened all the motormount bolts, pulled off the starter housing, slave, radiator and took all the intake stuff off in about 6 hours.

the shop took 8 hours to pull the old motor (1-2 more hours needed as the motor mounts were shot and then we had to replace them and loosen the steering rack) then the shop put the engine back in and the clutch is along with the headers and all the accessories. we just did the wiring, radiator, filled with oil and water and attached the wiring harness . it took another 3 hours of our time to get it running. Let a shop do it for you, and you are looking at least, 20-24 hours (especially, since we didnt have any of the emmissions stuff or A/C, etc.)

Now, since we got 2.5 hours of total running time on the motor and it seized, we have to do the ENTIRE THING AGAIN!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!

The shop is a TOP TOP notch Shark Oasis. Owner has a few 928's and has worked on them since their introduction. He loves them! End of story on that.

No problem with the current motor, runs perfect. In fact, kind of makes me reserved to change it in some ways....

Do you think 20-24 hours is close to shop book time?

If it is a plug and play like you suggest then I would have thought 2 shop days would be sufficient.

Fault diagnosis and minor niggling repairs could easily add up though.

Mitchell shows book time for an 86 5sp as 14.5 hrs. That includes 1.9 hrs for A/C, P/S and cruise control interference.
By the way, that is a sweet looking motor!

Does anyone have the Porsche shop manual to see if 14.5 hours is correct?

Thanks for the info and compliment!

No manuals at all...

15 to 20 hours will be about right. I can do it (i.e., have done) on my 5spd in 10 hours out and 10 in.

What's the quote total? If it's acceptable, and they stick to it, then you should be happy.
