Default Drive shaft gator replacement.

Finally i decide to change split drive shaft gators (inner and outer) I ring main dealer who tells me outer gators they can supply, inner gators - I need to replace driveshaft!

So, I check workshop manual - seems a bit vague, parts fiche - shows kit for outers, but not inners....At this point i start to worry!

Next step - call independant supplier "yep, we can supply inner gators, just knock of CV joint and slide along shaft and secure" Makes sense.

Question is - who's correct? or are they both?

All four boots/gators can be replaced and the CV joints serviced. Be prepared for a mess - and have a good breakfast before tackling the 330Ft.lbs outer axle nuts.
The archives are full of stuff - search CV joint, rear axle, half shaft, ...( ubder 928 sector)
Thom entered a concise rendition,

.... It also must be packed with the right grease. 928SP sells a CV boot kit for $15.

To service CVs and Rear Drive Shafts/Half Shafts:
1. Remove 300 lb. torque nuts (behind center hubcaps).
2. Remove hex bolts (6 per inner CV).
3. Remove drive shafts.
4. Snip off boots and clamps.
5. Remove CV bolts, plates that act as washers through which 2 bolts go, and end cap.
6. Clean CVs. The inner CV cap on the shaft side of the outer CV is welded on. I got really dirty shooting water with a self service car wash wand through and around the bearing and housing. There is a small hole through the center of the shaft that should be open on the outer/wheel end. (The 300 lb torqued nut goes on this end of the drive shaft.) The inner side bearing was much cleaner to high pressure wash.
7. I shot the bearings with brake cleaner and mineral spirits to flush out any water.
8. Force grease into the outer joint with gloved fingers. Cycle the CV up and down and around while forcing in grease.
9. Remove inner CV by pulling the circlip. Mine practically dropped right off the shaft.
10. Install 2 boots and 4 clamps on one shaft. Leave the bolted side inner boot loose on the shaft.
11. Install the inner CV and circlip.
12. Pack the inner CV.
13. Install bolts, corresponding plates, and end caps on inner CV.
14. Tighten all clamps. "

Happy 'Gator hunting

Just to make sure you don't do too much work if you don't want to. It's possible to change CV boots without taking drive shafts completely off. Just remove 6 bolts from differential side joint, slide joint away from flange, take joint of the shaft by removing circlip and change both booths while shaft is still attached to wheel hub. Messy and little difficult but saves opening that 300 lb hub nut.

Definately a good option. I could do with checking CV joints so will probably end up stripping the lot down. Thanks for the input.

You can undo the hub nut with a jack easily (see Tony's site v1uhoh), and get it pretty tight the same way, then have it properly torqued at a nearby shop.

Panic!!!! Just had workshop who are fitting inner gators on the phone, can anyone confirm or otherwise that the inner gator kit is the same as the outer kit. Dealer supplying parts has supplied 2 identical kits and assures me that is correct. Quick look on 928 international site seems to suggest otherwise.

Help! (thankyou)

It is infact the same! I replaced a half shaft last spring because of CV damage resulting from a torn boot and dirt ingress. The outside CV (next to hub) is not repairable but the CV next transaxle is, keep this in mind if you find one of the CV's is bad when you replace the boots. I would advise against trying to replace the boots while the shaft is still in the car because it will make cleaning and repacking the joints much more difficult. In addition to that you won't be able to check the condition of the joints. The axle nut really isn't that bad to remove provided you are using the right tools I.E. 3/4 drive breaker and torque wrench, worst case you may have to rent one.
