Default electric water pump

has anyone thought of replacing the existing water pump with electric? could the impeller be pulled from the stock item and the casing modified to take a dedicated belt roller with pumping undertaken by the electric pump? seems this would have several advantages in terms of removing a source of timing belt failure and also improving engine cooling while reducing parasitic losses.

i have not looked a t the stock pump very closely to see how hard replacing the impeller would be with a belt roller, the pump could be mounted in line with the lower radiator hose. any thoughts?

Yeah, this came up before - I'll see if I can find the thread.

OK, it was here:

and here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/40331-electric-water-pump.html

Heinrich was supposed to give it a try but he probably forot his promise.

Here's a company that makes a generic one:

Also, the are make specific ones out there that might be modified to work:

Ah, I forgot about your stockpile.

You don't like 928intl's solution of the new end tanks?

I'm sorry, I may be comming into this too late.

And I don't want to hijack Nick's thread.

Brendan, the end tanks are fine but they do not contain new oil coolers as I understand it ........

no worries brendan, although i did a search before i didnt find anything specific. it seems this has been thought of and some creative energies channeled this way previously. what i need to do is get hold of an old pump which i might do next week.

As I recall nick the issue was that you still have the wear issue in the bearing on the fake pump pulley.

H - So the coolant is leaking out of the passages in the oil coolers?

I need to do a waterpump soon and I'd like to give this a try too. Does anyone have a dead core they'd part with? Would need to be one that'd fit an '82 US.

Why not just buy one of OUR rebuilt pumps they have been excellent with over 15 years experience and lots and lots of pumps.......... any substitute roller you select will have ZERO experience in this application. Many years ago Mark A. drysumped an engine but removed the stock oil pump and used a roller replacement. It made it much harder to work on the engine. The next iteration he scavenged only with the added pump and made pressure with the stock oil pump which is how it has been run for many years. Does any production car made now use an electric water pump ? Besides the draw of an electric pump means the alternator has to do more work there is no free energy !
