Default Stroker Crank Group buy?

Would one of the 928 vendors want to put together anther "group buy" of stroker cranks?
Balanced for 968 pistons and Carillo or Oliver Rods

Scat or Moldex.

Does anyone from the first set of buys want to sell theirs?

As I recall Moldex actually seems to be able to make them for about 2400 one at a time? You have to "wait" for them, but no reliance on others to come up with $$$.

Don Hanson's crank is at Devek - the one that was in the motor that blew up - Mark was checking it out - maybe its still okay?

I believe Dean K (BC) is selling his moldex crank. Check under the 928 race car for sale thread...that plus other "big" block stuff for sale...

Later,
Tom

I was hoping Moldex would move a bit faster if there were 6 cranks being made instead of one

DK wants to sell the pistons and rods w/ the crank because it's a balanced set. I'm going with 968 pistons, not JE

In my conversations with them they told me it did not matter how many we ordered. The price was still $2,200 and takes 6-8 weeks.

$2200 x 0.75 = 1650 euros = cheap for us at this side of small pond

1650 euros + shipping ($250 ?) + 7% customs fee + 22% VAT = about 2400 euros = about $3200

Need to find a way to get it through customs legally without them taking large cut.

whitie at moldex summed it up when I was bugging him for mine: do you want it done fast or done right? ha! the stroker train ain't exactly a fast track to power...

mostly just need to have them clearance for a specific rod/length... you'll need to supply addn't parts for them to balance whole thing- make sure your pistons are the rt ht 1st, so you don't have to rebalance if you need to cut them down

Erkka,

You could always say it was a used crank, and get a dummy invoice for a lesser amount. The customs would not know, nor be able to prove it was new... You would of course need someone in the USA to arrange the dummy invoice, or Shipping Declaration...

Maybe someone on the list would do it for $100... Actually, if someone on the list had the crank shipped to them first, then sent it to you, it would be a used crank, and they could legally write anything they wanted on the bill of sale..... It would be legal for the EU customs as far as the paperwork was concerned...

INCOTERMS....

If you declared the value as being 500USD, it would save you a bit of $$$

These guys show a cheap process for stroking a Ford crank:
http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/techarticles/73719/
But they're only adding 0.25" and we want more like 0.4". Plus you'd need to come up with a GTS crank to start with.

Take a vacation and go over to the states, bring home the crank in the suitcase, you get a vacation and a crank for under 2400 euros.

Thought already crossed in my mind and did take some measurements of '83 crank while cleaning it other day

Problem with carrying it in luggage is it's size and weight. It might be too big to fit to airline rules. Paying extra would make trip less profitable option. Also have thought about using middleman. Now would be good time to buy as dollar is really low. Unfortunately have many other parts to get first. And then there is small logistic problem of getting GT cams from UK. Bought them months ago and they're still in relatives place in Manchester. Sourcing parts is full time job in it self.

That Ford crank welding looks interesting. At least it's more subtle than some other welding methods. Maybe it could be used to make 5.xL 'mini' stroker out of common 78.9mm crank. Only problem is to find suitable connecting rods.

Bob Devore of early Devek fame built a 6.2 liter 16 valve using a welded crank and standard Chevy dimensions. I'm testing my 50's memory but he used forged 400 chevy pistons @ 4.125 and welded the crank to 3.48 stroke, a standard 350 chevy dimension. He reportedly got in excess of 580 hp. I have an old Excellence magazine that featured the car and engine. It was entitled the "Highwayman."
