Like I said hand built preproduction prototype ! it was not on the assembly line it deserves to be in a museum somewhere not being flogged until it's last breath on the tracks !

It kind of sounds like the shop, upon the advice from 928intl, was able to get the car running with the newer 35 pin EZK while leaving off some of the connections. (one of reasons, i suppose, that the shop made the note that the harness was installed, but some of the pins dont match up correctly)

so, i would think that the car still has no knock sensors or Halls. by the way, what are the halls on the cams used for today? (or on 87+)

It is interesting, a little strange too!

It would appear that originally the car did not have knock sensors, or a Hall sensor. Perhaps these were retro -fitted, along with the new wiring harness and standard EZK box.

maybe someone can trade me a GTS, so i can flog that instead. Then the ole Holbert car can finally rest in a museum. Until that happens or pigs fly, i still think the Holbert racer has a quite a few breaths left.

It has been pretty cool seeing all the one-off custom stuff done off the main assembly line. also interesting to see the work done to do the automatic - stick converison. (the 86 born chassis #062 was originally an automatic).

Without the HAll sensor, the EZK doesn't know what cylinder is firing and knocking. If the Hall sensor fails, the ignition is retarded 6 degrees at high engine loads.

The Hall senor also is used as a "get home" aid if the flywheel postion sensor fails. Its signal is used as a crude TDC marker.

hey, i cant argue with 335 torque and 335 hp (when we first got the good runs, and now we are more like 320 and 320, however, I may have been 1 tooth off on the cam pulleys then)
wonder if the gain in hp is due to the retared timing at high speeds. If thats the default, and the shop just installed a EZK 35pin for a 25pin type, wouldnt the EZK do the retard? Hmmmm. 6 degrees is a lot. oh well, i got what i got!!! nothing i can do now! right?

LOL

Then we would miss all of the great, amusing comments by Mark that crack me up. We all worry about little things like timing belts and water pumps and he just keeps driving the living snot out of the car, with broken gears and missing pieces (probably bouncing around in the oil pan). I for one, look forward to Mark writing of his adventures.

Kibort has indeed been blessed the fact that he was able to REGISTER this car at all is a miracle in and of itself. The car was never ever intended to be on the road Porsche donated it as a safety car to be used to support racing carry medical crew.....it was donated to a school to be torn apart (teacher would not let the kids take it apart).....then turned up at a repair shop in Reno not running sat for many years.. They got some parts from us to get it running then we helped Mark "find it".....

"maybe someone can trade me a GTS, so i can flog that instead"

Mark-

You know that I'm kind of a 928 purist; I love nothing more than my driveway, a beer, and a project to clean some part of my car on a sunny day here in Florida. Time spent improving Dr.Porsche's best project is not just time spent cleaning the car...it is soothing.

At the same time, I'm not Jay Leno. Connie Kalitta doesn't pay me $20 million per year, so I can't maintain a gigantic garage of odd, cool, and collectable automobiles. I can only concentrate on one particular car; My choice is the 928.

I remember reading about the Holbert run in the car magazines while I was in college; the previous summer to that article, a guy that I flew model airplanes with in the Toledo Weak Signals bought a 928 and brought it to the field in LaSalle, Michigan. Gawd I was enthused! I cut the article out of the magazine at Embry-Riddle and mounted it on my dorm wall!

-Should you ever get tired of racing that car, let me know. First of all, I love my current car, but am intrested in a change. Second, I have a perfectly good S2 that finally runs right and has an interior that I spent $3100 making nice. It would make a great race car. And your car, with its history, would make a great preservation project...

I say run it and run it hard to make more history, we already know what it has done!

I love what Mark has done with the Holbert car. He saved it from what likely would have been a far worse fate - terminal neglect and obscurity. Al Holbert would be happy. He was such an important person to Porsche (look at his IMSA records) who unfortunately left us in the prime of his life when he was just getting ready to lead Porsche NA Racing. His death cut short that effort. I smile every time I see this

Thanks to Mark Anderson for connecting Mark with the Holbert car. It couldn't have better owner.

Norm if you're going to buy a racecar, you'll need the interior on which you just spent all that money. And you'll need to gut yours for the recipient if he/she's going to be a racer.

"K"

So, it looks like the EZK was conversion from the 25pin to the 35 pin. ON a shop workorder, there is some mention that with the new harness, not all the pins line up correctly. Hmmmmm. what does this mean!!

.....then turned up at a repair shop in Reno not running sat for many years.. They got some parts from us to get it running then we helped Mark "find it".....

Q. So who has the origninal EZK and LH?

after all these years, i finally understand. the holbert car has the original LH box, (that was checked out by 928inl and returned to the owner for reinstall)
then, the EZK was found to have an issue , or was suspect, so 928intl sold them a stock EZK for an s4 AND the new wiring harness. the shop did the conversion and it ran! I have the original EZK, as i have pictured on the first post. Im sending it off to rich for evaluation.
all the computer boxes, whether they are engine managment or headlights/fans, etc, all have this "G18" code designator. its like some top secret project code! even beth, whom was trying my fan computer and amplifier, saw the "G18" designator on the boxes.

Thanks Bill.
As everyone knows, i just love this car. It makes me smile every day i walk around it to get to my commuter car. I live for the weekends where i drive it to the grocery store (via, the 60-100mph long route!)
Its got such a great story behind it, im just trying to do the car justice. It got a second chance to do what it was designed to do, RACE. you will be hard pressed to find another car from another manufacturer, with equal mods, to beat it, even 15 years newer! Hopefully, Al is looking down at what im doing with this ole car and smiling too!
(too bad porsche has not shown any interest. I think they could get a lot of mileage out of what im doing with one of there old flagships!)
