Default Motor Mounts -- Wow! What a difference

I am very thankful that the Rennlist community got me thinking about motor mounts. The rough roads here in Northern VA were keeping me from driving my new shark as much as I wanted to. I would have eventually gone the suspension repair/replace route to attempt to soften the ride, but with your guidance I had the motor mounts replaced instead. What an incredible difference. The engine cranks without vibration, the auto trans shifts without "clunks", and the ride....... Wow. The road seams and patches that would jar your teeth before are now just minor bumps. My baby now floats on the road and feels like a totally different car. I am thrilled. Thank you all!!

Steve
One thing I have noticed about the engine (with good mounts) is how smooth it is....you can barely feel it running...place you hand on the intake manifold....the engine doesn't move very much at all...much less than other cars I have owned! You sure can hear it though with the RMB....and what a great sound it is! Good to hear your enjoying your 88...I really enjoy mine!

Steve:

Glad to here yours turned out great. I can't wait. I had to postpone my motor mount "party" because of work, but want to get to it as soon as tax season ends and I get some rest. Probably the end of April will be a good time for a motor mount and oil pan gasket replacement party, with copious amount of cold liquid adult refreshments and some great grilled food. Maybe even a poker game in the garage when it's all done. Interested?

A Springtime drive down to Charlottesville in my shark for poker and adult refreshments? Hmmmmmm. That doesn't require a lot of thought. I'd love to, Bill. Thanks.

You will really enjoy the new mounts. I'm on day 2 and I'm still looking for excuses to drive my car - like a 16 year-old.

Glad to hear your shark is rockin', but not "rockin'" Steve. Sounds like the next big thing for me to do. I noticed they don't look to great while doing other stuff underneath. Did you do anything else with the mounts?

I want to pull the motor to do the hall sensor replacement, motor mounts, oil pan gasket and clean the engine. Anything else suggested while I have it out? Probably looking at May since I'm asking for an engine lift for the b-day.

I concur. New motor mounts offer a big improvement in ride and handling quality. In a month or so I'll be getting a new set of shocks all around. I'll be very interested to see what effect that has. My current ones are still the factory originals.

Hope to be installing my Anchor 2698 mounts in a week or so...along with a ton of other stuff....did everyone use the Ford mounts or go with the Porsche originals....if you went with Fords, were there any issues?....in notice that the mounts i bought are made in USA and they have a small tit on them which im assuming will have to be ground off....will be getting to this once we get back from a quick trip to Cuba.....

JT.........I also installed the Anchor 2698 mounts and I got them from my local NAPA store@ $70CDN each..........no shipping, no customs, no $$$ exchange. You don't have to grind off the 'tit'........it'll fit into a groove in the metal engine mount shroud.

Please can you say how long it took you, and which write ups you followed. Any tips you can add? I really want to get this done but I'm dreading it, not least because my car is not too clean around the sump. I'm going to buy a pressure washer to try to clean it up first, but there's snow here at the moment, so that's a good exuse to put it off a little longer.

I just returned home from 2-3 hours driving my "new shark". What a great way to spend a Saturday night.

I did also have the oil pan gasket replaced while the car was in sick bay.

Many Rennlisters have had success with the Ford motor mounts and have saved significant $$. My mechanic turned up his nose when I mentioned using something other than Porsche parts. I want him to stand by his work, so I backed off and agreed to let him do it his way. I suspect that the Ford MM's are fine. Maybe next time when/if I am more comfortable with my knowledge of the 928's I will insist. Maybe next time I will do the work myself.

I had thought that the AT linkage adjustments and the Kickdown switch were the biggest improvements I've made to my car, but the motor mounts are right up there.

Paul.........I followed John Pirtles write up from his web site. I have an air compressor with both 1/2 and 3/8 inch impact guns which made disassembly OK. I removed the sway bar completely for more room, loosened the steering knuckle to allow the strg rack to be moved further out, used a long tapered punch to remove the horizontal cross member bolts. The install was a struggle until I installed the MMs and all vertical x-member bolts all very loosely and then used the trolley jack to ease the x-member up the last inch using the same tapered punch for alignment to install the horizontal bolts. After that its install and torque the remaining bolts for the MMs, x-member, steering rack and sway bar. I also had the front calipers and rotors off (for the 'big red' caliper paint job) which also gave more room under the car.

Snow in London ha!.........look where I live! You must be up watchin' F1?

Thanks Malcolm, think I might treat myself to an electric/air impact gun. I really need to motivate myself to do this job, and that might help a little. Not real snow like you're used to, but it still makes life interesting if you have to work in the open (which thankfully I don't have to anymore). Missed F1 today, in fact I can't remember the last time I watched.

Paul, go air. Many more accessories you can get for cheaper than a bunch of electric tools like ratchet, fillers (for tires, rafts, *****, etc.), grinders, cutters, painting, airbrushing, sandblasting....

If you get air tools and think you'll use other ones later, get a 20 gallon (?litres) or bigger upright tank. If you don't, several tools will not work well because of low air.

Have fun!
