Bumper Stripper
So used some SEM stuff and it was OKAY, but I found this "bulldog" stuff by KLEAN strip - and I was thinking:
What the hell material ARE our bumpers? TPO? Urethane? POS? APB? CCCP? WYAIT?
Heh.

Brendan I had my bars blasted as part of my resto, they used peachstone and walnut shell, it doesn't damage the plastic, dont use the stripper it is ****. I have tried it, just pay to have it done, it is worth every cent.

Thanks Greg. Problem: Both bumper have considerable "repair" plastic in them. So far the stripper that I DID use destroyed that bond. I think the blasting will make it worse. I'm really in a pickle on the bumpers.
Another issue is that the ONLY PLACE THAT I HAVE FOUND in SoCal that does media blasting charged 200 dollars! to blast my S4 front bumper. You can do that when your the only game in town. Its nuts what CA has done to this industry because of emmissions and waste management.

Yea, blame the enviros. Ever notice how the people working for the building restoration trades are all foreign nationals and they all have big lumps on their forearms and the back of their skulls?

Bummer.
I insure a few plating companies around here. Well, a couple. All the others were run out of business for various reasons, real and imagined. The county simply decided that they did not want plating in the area anymore. So they used guerilla political tactics. Some were dumping and using incorrect evac policies. Others simply were too big and the county wanted them of thier area - but didn't give another option.
Same with Acid Dipping and media blasting.
I think your winching at my attack on enviro-politics in CA, but I honestly don't get the lumps thing. You'll have to explain it, unless someone else can enlighten me.
New York? Near to New Jersey, America's Petro Chemical capital?

Use wet and dry sandpaper using a rubber block and starting with 80 grit and finishing up with 400. You will be surprised how quickly the paint will come off. Use lots of water while sanding

Brendan they charge $220 AUD here to do it, if they use the media I mentioned, it is expensive as they only get to use it a couple of times. $220 AUD is about $180 USD.
So its not that dear in comparison, you can have aluminium oxide done much cheaper but it will wreck the bar, so becareful.
Cheers Greg

Looks like I'm with Terrence on this. We (OK, the child units) sanded both front and rear bumpers for painting. Took about 8 hours each.
Used a power sander on the easy pieces with 100 grit, 60 grit by hand isn the toughr, and then did a surface sand with 200 overall. Get it all looking grey, yellow or black and it's good. Apparently the plastic is black and there's a yellow primer over that, then a grey primer, then topcoat.
Used some SEM spray-can adhesion promoter and it's worked fine.

The bumpers were developed using technology by Phoenix Gummiwerke of Hanover and are flexible polyurethane plastic . An elastic paint was used which resists cracking when flexed.

So its Poly then.
My child unit is 2.5yrs old. No sanding for him.
I'm just avoiding the work is all.
