It looks somewhat possible with a shorter torque tube:
There may be some need for opening the TT area under the car.

Hi I'm Dave, this is my first message on rennlist. I hope I'm doing it right. There is a company called Motodyne that offers a kit to fit the corvette 6 spd into the 928. Their web address is www.motodyne.com click on Porsche 928 and the kit as well as some other 928 products are available.

Surely this can't always be the case? I think I would stick to getting a local engineer to make one fit and learn it all the hard way - peace of mind this way, especially when you live so far away from the suppliers.

We looked into Chevy Transaxle....
When we built our blower (chevy) powered 1982 928 we blew out the 3 speed transaxle (in all fairness it had over 100,000 miles on it), and looked at shops to convert to C5 Corvette rear end. The lowest price labor was $5,000 quoted. In my experience, quotes are within 100% of what the actual cost will be, so I figured $10,000 in labor. Since I was already pulling 550 lbs of torque, in the end we figured 3 speeds were looking mighty good. For a total of $4500 we put a three speed back in but modified it with posi-traction (sort-of) including labor and a reman transaxle. Spend your dollars on engine and handling upgrades and you won't need the extra gear.

Thats been one of my thoughts... My 928 is the first auto I've driven that seems alright. It kind of suits the car. I'll be leaving the 3spd transaxle in her until it dies, and focus on the engine. Maybe I am getting lazy but if I did replace it I'd most likely go for the factory 4spd transaxle as opposed to a manual, partially due to cost but also due to simplicity.
Do you know how much hp both the standard 3spd and 4spd boxes is known to handle safely?
