Default CV Boots !!!

Another winter maintenance was to change the 2 outside CV boots.

Order the parts (Thanks Jeannie).

Check in the shop manual and on Rennlist (Nichols site) and saw that is was not very difficult to do.

I decided to take the axle out since the boots were cracked and the joints are probably dirty. It will be easier to clean. I removed the RMB and lower the exhaust.

A nice afternoon under the car.

Then that guy Murphy, you know the guy that invent the law that have is name, arrived to visit.

First, I was not able to remove the axle nut. I try with my electric impact wrench. No result. Since it is only 240 ft. lbs. of torque, I decided the use a 1/2-in.-Drive 24" Flexible handle with my 32 MM socket and a long water pipe. Broke the flexible handle.Put some lubricant on the axle nut. Have to go exchange that handle.

End of day one.

Next morning, time to try again with the 1/2-in.-Drive Flexible handle. Before, I put some heat on the nut. Same result. I need another handle.

End of day 2.Week-end is over. Will try next week-end.

Serious difficulties need serious tools. Time to rent a real impact wrench (Hitachi with 450 ft. lbs. of torque). After 40 minutes, both axle nuts are removed.

Second, I was not able to remove the inner CV joint. After removing the circlip,I tried to move the axle out of the CV joint with a rubber hammer, then moved to a bigger hammer. No results.

Went to my local mechanic to use his hydraulic press. Bad news, the ball cage split in half (see pics). The ball hub stays on the axle. Unable to remove it. Try with a puller, a hammer, with heat. I decided to cut it.

End of day 3.

Now I have to order a new CV joint. I will do the other one tomorrow.

Axle nut is supposed to be just shy of 340 ft lbs., not 240. 3/4" is needed. You aren't the first to break a 1/2" on that nut. Not sure why the CV was seized on the axle. The outers do not come off, but the inner should without a whole lot of pounding. Fun and games.
