Funny thing is that in the X chronicles, there was so much mud slinging going on I don't think I ever saw any pricing. But they sure had a good time!

Andy:

On the 85 and I believe 86 model year cars there is the little green wire on the ECM's that you can plug together in order to run low octane fuel. I was wondering if that idea had crossed your mind in order to run more boost. I believe that the plug will account for about a 3 degree timing retard.

Ken

it does exactly that. I have toyed around with that connector but I leave it unplugged because it just doesn't seem necessary to me. I also have an SMT6 to dynamically adjust timing instead of a solid 3-degree retard... but that's besides the point.

So Mike:

Is the STM6 beyond the electrically challenged of us?

I am in the process of an exhaust upgrade and was toying with the idea of an STM6 in preparation for a supercharger next year.

Ken

Ken,
I haven't tried that yet. I was also going to mention for you to cintact Mike about the SM install. Louis Ott sells them.

the SMT6 isn't bad once someone else has already done the wiring leg-work =)

you DO need to make really good solder joints tho.

So :

Has anyone already installed one of these in an 85 model year?
Does this system allow you to just modify the existing data...I don't want to reinvent the wheel, I'd just like to smooth out the fuel and be able to adjust the igition as needed.

What are the lap top requirements, I'll have to purchase a laptop as well.

Regards,

Ken

i have a crappy k6-3 450Mhz laptop that can barely run win2k. Anything with a serial port that runs win98 or better should work and be decent. Shouldn't cost you more than $250 for such a laptop.

Think of it as a chip that you can tune on your own. You can tune the ignition to 12 degrees in either direction (that's what i've been successful with). As far as smoothing out AFR, you're basically increasing or decreasing the incoming MAF signal to the ECU by small voltages to have the ECU add/subtract fuel to the motor. Your limit here is the lookup map in the ECU. Once you exceed the MAF voltage, you won't be able to add more fuel. What i'm doing is adding a little more fuel via pressure than I need, then subtracting some via the SMT6.
