Hey Steve, thanks for the kind words.

Steve's LH failure was showing all the classic symptoms, i.e. dumping fuel like the Exxon Valdez, and when the engine actually ran, would not idle & had to keep feathering the throttle to keep it running. Steve had among other things, installed a new set of plugs and they became so fouled during the previous troubleshooting that they became unuseable and had to be replaced. We literally poured gasoline out of them when they were removed!

Steve's 928 is a real beauty, one of the most pristine interiors I have ever seen. It will be good to have another Shark roaming the streets of San Diego

Bill:

Kudos for stepping in and giving expert personal assistance. Had Steve found you a bit earlier he could have avoided a lot of aggravation, but at least he has a lot of new parts now and knows a lot more about troubleshooting no-start in an S4.

Thanks Bill. One more thing I found a little interesting and amusing; Steve's car has not been driven for probably 10 years and has been in storage, was driven very little prior to that. For you racers/autocrossers out there, his car has an almost NEW set of Yokohama A-008R tires on it. I haven't seen a set of those since @ '88 or '89 and needless to say, they are now hard as rocks!! Real museum pieces now!

I'd not heard of John Speake or Rennlist when my car died. I was told the LH was dead so I sourced a used one from a dismantler. Now I'm waiting for this one to fail. At least I've met John a few times now so I know exactly who to contact when the inevitable happens.

Bill,

Thanks for the referral! I've been busy working on LHs so I haven't been on the list the past day. Steve should be on the road Saturday if the rains don't hamper FedEx with timely deliveries.

As discussed, ONLY get a rebuld LH that has the hybrid circuit replaced with a non-Bosch circuit. Buying a used LH is risky. I've rebuilt several "second generation" Bosch replacement LHs (that say Made in Spain). I've been speaking with a garage who has a customer that just paid a dealer for a new LH that failed in a few months after installation.

Rich, the answer IMHO is to move away from LH altogether. As you know I have an LH with a good hybrid but another bad chip. Can't find one. It's my spare so I'm not up for spending that much on having it replaced.

Which chip, Heinrich ? Once the dreaded hybrid is repalced, they are usually very reliable.

I have sourced some to the other chips, some of which were specials, only made for Bosch.

Thanks a bunch to everyone, especially Bill and Rich. I'm headed out to wait for the Fed-x guy right now. I sent my computer to Rich on Thursday, and I'll have it in the car today. Now that's service!!!!

Thanks again everyone,
Steve

Hope it works. We'll keep our toes & fingers crossed.
For the long term, though, we can't do this continually,
so good luck!

The ultimate solution is a more mass produced efi and spark system.

Are the LH units in 928s interchangable with LHs from other cars? Obviously the EEPROM would have to be swapped or reprogrammed.

Hi Matt,
No, it was a "special" for the Porscfhe 928, not used on any other car on the planet.

Volvo's and Saabs of the same period that used LH injection used a much simpler ECU - a LH 2.4 series.

Porsche 928 is LH 2.3 series.

Once the hybrid is replaced, they will be just as reliable as a modern equivalent.

If you fit a Motec or similar, you have a big task in remapping the whole thing from scratch

Absolutley. The issue is that then we have MAP, no MAF, and infinite combinations of colors and flavours.

I was hoping I could just swap in the ECU from my 9000 when it dies.
