Default GM "KLEENS" is nowhere to be found

A very helpful rennlister suggested some "KLEENS" from a GM dealer to clean up the S4 pistons I have. They have carbon in the ring groove and before I send them out to be coated I wanted to really clean them out in there. So instead of ruining the grooves... You know.

Called FIVE GM dealers, and this stuff is San Diego Vaporware - nobody even has heard of it.

Anybody have any idea?

"Cleens" is the item - so, who can spell correctly everytime
GM# 992872 is the liquid in 500ml cans, # 993026 is the aerosol - reading the label, it is full of carcinogenic goodies that are legal here - maybe not in the US. Smells good, tastes not bad - and like Buckley's cough medicine. it works!

Wish I had known about something like that, spend hours cleaning out the ringlands soaking in degreaser and using wooden toothpics.

I used a 1 gallon can of parts solvent from Autozone to descarbonize a bunch of terribly caked up motorcycle pistons. I think Berrymans. Left them in there for 2 weeks. The stuff fell off. Plus Autozone & Kragans sells a ring groove cleaner tool that isn't very expensive and works well.

Hi.

DONT use the ring groove cleaners. They can cause real problems. B.C. try Easy off! don't let it sit on there for long, but it really does a number on carbon and is water soluble and rinses off with plenty of water.

Good luck!

Oven cleaners, as the above, and cleaners for soot/creosote on wood stove glass doors will also do a good job - but they are highly alkaline, and are death on aluminium if left in contact.
On very short term contact - and lots of rinse water as fst951 says, they can do the job; however, if the rings are still (stuck) in the grooves or there is a temptation to 'let 'er soak' for a while - Don't!
Aggressive alkaline products can pit aluminium as you watch ...

I've always used a broken piston ring to clean the grooves out plus thinners and a very hot jet wash.
