Default Wanted: Fixed Headlight Conversion Kit

I want a fixed headlight conversion kit something like this:

I contacted this guy twice, but he has yet to get back to me with a price. I've also looked at the conversions from Jacquemond, but I don't want to modify my fenders, which is why the conversion pictured above is attractive.

Does anyone know where to get something like this? Does anyone have any brilliant ideas on how to fab this up? I don't have the time, inclination, or capability to fab my own, so if someone wants to take the initiative, I'll be your first customer.

Maybe PorKen's solution would work for you...

Exclamation For every simple solution there are a number of complex problems.

What year 928 do you have?

I like your setup...is this something you can resell, or at least share the details with me so I could fab up my own? I don't really have much fabrication experience or capabilities (equipment-wise), so something pre-made would be ideal.

Sorry, I need to update my profile. I have a 1980 928 Euro 5 spd. with an S appearance package (but sadly, no S engine). I'm flying out to Cali tomorrow night to go pick it up...acquired it in December, my brother lives out there and took delivery. I'll be driving it back across the country all next week.

Just a question, I would have thought that those tiny little lights don't provide the same amount as standard lights do. Or at least the ones they fit to the cars here. H4s or something?

ideola,

Glad you like it!

If you didn't find it, here's the fab thread (Fixed Headlights Installed). I have since changed the design, as the opening is too small for two lights, and cuts off some of the beam, if they are recessed (which is the way I like them).

I will be working on better brackets to install the lights, but not for a few months*. There is little interest for a fixed kit, so I'm doing it for myself, mainly.

BTW: Update your signature!

I will be working on a lightweight sunroof panel first. See my (homepage) for more crazy stuff.

Greg,

The lights in the car at the top are smaller than the Hella units I'm using which use a H9 bulb. H9s are brighter and give a whiter light than H4s.

Projectors focus the beam, so more of the light is used in the beam (there's some percentage which I can't recall, but projectors are best for light output, versus glare), and the cutoff is extremely sharp.

In the past -- pre-projector days -- consensus was that a larger reflector was the best way to increase light output, all else being equal. IOW you would get more light to the road out of a 55W bulb if it was mounted in a 7" reflector than if it was mounted in a 6" reflector. Thus, in the "Spinal Tap" tradition of "One more" we have 8" lights on many 928s. It has been said that projectors get even more of the light out to the road, and have a sharper cutoff. Having said that, I find the cutoff on my 8" H4s to be excellent... very sharp... and I find that when a car has annoyingly bright and blinding low beams, usually they are projectors. YMMV, and draw your own conclusions.

HTH

OK, my profile is updated... :-)
So, I read the entire thread about fitment...but I'm not clear whether you're willing to fab up the brackets, harness and cover. If you are, I'll buy one right now, no brainer, provided the prices are at least close to what you posted a year ago ;-)

I can get my own lights from the source you mentioned.

Also, I know a 'glass guy who is working on a fixed kit for the 924. He might be interested in helping out with the bucket. Once I get my shark in MI, and if you can provide me with the fitment kit, I can show him what we've got and see what it would take to make the bucket.

Andrew-
unfortunately, I can't make it tonight...I'm flying out tomorrow to Cali to go pick up the 928, which I will be driving back to MI all next week, so needless to say, I have a full plate tonight getting packed and everything. Once I get back to MI, I am definitely planning to hook up with the group. I'll bring the 928 and the 924 (my son's car).

ideola,

I'm not able or willing to make a copy of the old design.

My new plan for the low beam is to have a two piece design. One that mounts to the body, and one that holds the light itself. This way, I can upgrade to the HID hi/lo in the future.

The brackets will most likely be laser cut, and bent at a shop. But as I said this is not going to happen for a few months.

If it works, I'll gladly sell you one!

OK, be sure to keep me updated. I am not in a huge rush, and I'm in even less of a hurry to hacking away at my fenders...I really want something that is "non-intrusive", so I'm willing to wait until you've perfected it :-) I'm definitely up for being your first customer.

Have a safe journey. BTW, there is a '928 Road Help List' out there. Unfortunately I don't have a copy otherwise I'd forward it to you, but if you search in the archives, I think you can find it. Good luck.
