Default The "new" 928 Journal

Posted on behalf of Roger M. Woodbury

Dear 928 Enthusiasts:

Sometime ago when I first discovered this club, I had just bought my first 928.
The 928OC was a natural, I thought, as this is truly a limited issue car and the
people who owned them needed a venue to swap information, thoughts and lies with
other most of whom wouldn't live close by. The Internet sports car club seemed
to me a logical progression in an age where the more traditional sports car club
might well not be able to survive.

When the idea of a magazine.or ezine.was floated, I was an enthusiastic
supporter. I wanted to write a regular column of miscellaneous ramblings
centered loosely around the idea of driving a 928 every day. Although I live in
rural Maine, where winter use of a 928 can be a contentious activity, it was my
intent to leave the car on the road year round, and to use it whenever possible.

Thus was born a column called: "Driving Every Day" and it appeared in the first
two issues of "The 928 Journal".

I was really saddened when the "Journal" fell of its own weight. I felt that
some sort of written venue was a terrific addition to the 928OC, and that the
928OC might itself fall if a simple ezine couldn't be supported. When I sold
the 928, I drifted away from the 928OC, although I never quite forgot the
experience of having a 928.

In the time that I owned my 928, I found that many things that were interesting
could happen as a direct result of being in such a car. After my 928 was gone,
there seemed some gaps in my automotive experience, and I began to write about
some of them. One such experience was written about in the second issue of
"Driving Every Day". If you will take a moment to read it, it does seem a
lovely fiction does it not? What's not compelling about a story about a
beautiful car and a beautiful, mysterious woman who appreciates and understands
that car. Might she grow to feel the same way about the man who owns it? I
always felt that driving the 928 was a sort of fiction of itself. All of the
performance combinations that were brought together by Herr Lapine in this car
almost foretold of the appearance in my life of Adrianna Barrows that cold,
sunny morning on Mt. Desert Island.

When the "928 Journal" failed to appear in a third issue, I was disappointed,
but somewhat relieved. Until last September, I thought I was finished with the
928. Then my wife found a nice one on eBay and we decided to bid. She knows
nothing about cars, but loved the lines and color and in a weakened moment we
made a ridiculously low bid that to my great surprise won. That night I
revisited the 928 OC website and began to wonder if "The 928 Journal" could
reappear.

That is what this letter is really about: the reappearance of "The 928 Journal"
. I have volunteered to serve as Editor at Large, and the intent is for
articles to begin to reappear under the banner, "The 928 Journal" in the near
future. This letter is being sent to you through the offices of the President,
Stan Shaw, and has met with the approval of the 928 Owners Club Board of
Directors.

In order for this to be a success, we need the support of the membership. This
is afterall, YOUR ezine and your Club. Unlike the previous magazine, this ezine
will not have a traditional magazine format. This will be a "blog" journal.
What I intend to do is to present new articles often, not waiting for a formal
deadline and "printing" date. Hopefully this continual freshness will make a
contribution that will help the 928OC continue to thrive.

So, what's so "new" about this effort and how will it differ from the current
Forum and other places on the website?

The major difference will lie in the content and the way that it is presented.
Every effort will be made to avoid duplication of the existing Forum and
exchange opportunities provided by the 928OC website. To this end, perhaps use
of the term "blog" is a disservice. Most of the information seen on the web
site is technical or merely factual. The "Journal" will be an outlet for
material that is informational and entertaining.

Here's an example. My last post to a Forum was concerning the color of my "new"
928, with reference to the Certificate of Authenticity. That kind of input is
particularly well suited to the Forums section of the website. However, the
color of my car isn't quite what it is represented to be, it seems, and there is
a history behind the car that is different and will provide an interesting story
for "The 928 Journal".

The content of the journal is to be open. Almost anything that has to do with
the Porsche 928 ownership and the driving experience will be welcome. What we
are looking for are articles about individual experiences owning and loving (or
hating) the 928. Poetry, prose, pictures or musings that might be of interest
are all welcome. If you have an idea but don't feel your writing skills are
strong enough to see it in print, send it to me, and I'll find a way to make
your idea appear. The worst thing is for no one to ask the question, "what if".
This is where you, the owner/enthusiast will come in: your input is welcome,
even if it is in the form of an idea. If you have something that you would like
to see written about, pose the idea and let's see what will happen.

Just after my wife and I bought "Kosar", our "football" brown 928, I received a
strange phone call. It was from an acquaintance from whom I had not heard since
the first Adrianna Barrows piece had appeared in "The 928 Journal". I had met
this guy when I was in the service and had not heard from him in about
twenty-five years. He told me that he worked for the government. He asked me
to hold back any further articles about Adrianna Barrows "for a little while"
and gave me a short document to read. My lawyer advised me to voluntarily
withhold anything further from publication as requested. The issue became moot,
as the third issue which would have included the second chapter of the saga of
Adrianna Barrows was never published.

Perhaps it was kismet when last May, this fellow called me to tell me that if I
wanted to write more about Adrianna Barrows, there was no objection, as he said,
"from his end."

So the first blog of the new, "928 Journal" will include the second chapter in
the saga of Adrianna Barrows, perhaps a market update on the 928 and a few other
things..or not.

For now, we'll make a start, and I hope that you will join me in this exciting
venture, as we continue in this joy of a lifetime: the 928 experience.

As previously advised, Roger M. Woodbury is at work reviving the 928 Journal.
An update on Roger's intent is posted at http://www.928oc.org/Journal.htm

Stan and Roger,

I'd like to do a bit of writing for this 'blog. The 928 spirit/bug has never left me. My boxster, though lovely enough, does not hold a candle to my '81 5sp moos. Tried to forget her, but she haunts me none the less. I'd be willing to spit ball ideas on how this can be done . . .

Of course the name does not exist .... read what the man said about "government agents". Most likely at this juncture, anyone even doing a Google for the name will pop up on the National Security Agency's Echelon system and be flagged for "further inquiry".
