Right on Heinrich! Personally, I'd never part a GTS unless its really beyond repair, but I can see how this could be completely saved.
Now where the F is it?!

I've seen many totaled cars and I would say there is a good probability of the engine being damaged from the sudden shift of the nose from left to right. The block could be cracked and the torque tube went along for the ride so it or the trans could also be damaged. Very risky unless the final auction price reflects a worst case scenario. You may end up paying more for an engine than the whole car.

Tom, ... Dave, hey now .... there are sunroofless '78's and then there are Sharkskin concours cars. Rixter, that swamper of yours would do better than this GTS on a track, don't you think? Imagine all that extra weight and luxury the GTS has to haul around. Engines, suspension and tranny would have to be improved on the GTS as well as on the '78, so you'd end up with the same car, only prettier and a bigger waste. No?

Well, I dunno about concours either(I'm not into the Q-tip thing), but watch what you say... my shark has sensitive ears...

Somehow I managed to not ride in your Shark this weekend, and was supremely pi$$ed at myself when I realised that. Bill's constant rubber burning and Rich's rocket-with-doggie were very cool. I was amazed at the sound level of your cars!!! Here, only a few rebels like John and me are endowed with the sound of thunder.

Really Heinrich you should come to a Track Attack if for no ther reason than to listen to the roar of 17 sharks tearing up the track. Wasn't a quiet one in the bunch last Sept.

Heinrich, no biggie... unfortunately it's going to be a while before I have my shark up your way. I'll be flying rather than driving up in April, but if you come south for any of the upcoming events this year(SITP, Devek, Sharktoberfest, other) I'll set things right.

Not a problem, and I'll even bring some large patches of velcro so you can stay in your seat.

My 82 had somewhat similar damage when I first purchased it. In my case the motor had been moved but the result was not a broken block or even bell housing, but rather that the front flange on the touque tube was bent about 1/8". It was not obvious at first, but after two exploded clutches in a few thousand miles I pulled it back apart and figured it out. This led me on a search for an inexpensive used torque tube in which I discovered that many many front end damaged 928s have bent front mounting flanges on their torque tubes. Obviously this is a later car, but I think the basic architechture is enough the same that I would look for this damage on this car and not expect a broken block.
Another thing I would be worried about also happend on my '82. It looks like the inner fender on the drivers side has come in a bit. Perhaps enough to press on the cam sprocket. 928 cams are pretty brittle and easily broken. Clearly if something like that has happened you have bent valves as well as a broken cam. In my case there was no internal damage but I did need a new cam and sprocket.
When I started my '82 project I purchased a front clip and intended to patch it. However the nature of the 928 unibody did not seem well suited to this. It is a big gob of sheet metal parts welded together with no single really strong part that you can use as a reference point. It looks like there are frame rails, buy they are not really that much stronger than anything else. So a damaged front end kinda resulted in a unibody what was pretty twisted throughout. And there was no clear spot to make the splice. In my case I opted to send my $1500 front clip to the chipper and replace the unibody with a '79. There are lots of horror stores about motor swaps, but I think unibody swaps are comparitively eash because you are taking the whole electrical and fuel system with you and everthing works together. Some minor bracket fabrication and some hole saw work (one hole, I think) was all that was required. And a boat load to wrenching, of course.
Even if I knew where this car was the timing would be way wrong for be but someday I would like to find a car just like this, and swap the while drive-trane, suspension, electrical, fuel, interior onto my '79 cab: Lock, stock and barrel.
