Proper torque procedure
I can't seem to locate and explanation for the WSM's torque procedure.
In many cases, a three step procedure is given; i.e. 25ft lbs for the 1st step, 48lbs for the second step, and 75+4 lbs for the third step.
What is the +4 portion? This appears many times in the manual.
I'm completely stumped.
This is in reference to bolting together my lower crankcase section to the block.

Could it be little odd way of saying to use between 75 lbs and 79 lbs? In other words 77 +/- 2 lbs. 77 and 79 might be more logical, rouded to nearest 5 or 10 or such, numbers when converted to Nm.

Hi jim,
I was going to call Mark (who sold me all the parts anyways) but I wanted to check here first so I don't pester the guy.
Besides, with all these engine rebuilds I can't believe this hasn't shown up in the forum before. I see no mention of it in the archives.

It's as Vliheur says: Just a way to give a torque range. Set the wrench for the target number and ignore the "+" part.
Lower crank section? Get a thin-napped mini roller and use the sealant sparingly...but not too sparingly. And use the real stuff. Home Despot had a good assorment of rollers when I needed one. I put on too much and spent two months waiting for bearings to fail. Never happened.
