Just pulled my center console... I hate PO's
In my quest to find and fix my vacuum leak, I pulled my center console today. (I am colder than a fiddler's bitch, too, I might add). Holy schlamoley! I could not believe all the weird stuff going on under there.
I knew somebody had done a chop-job in the past on the stereo harness... I had cleaned up a lot of it during the keyhole surgery I did when I put in the stereo. However, about 2 inches past where my neatly executed harness ended, there was a rat's nest of incomprehensible crap. That's all gotta be fixed.
Then, there are some mystery hot wires that had been spliced into the cigarette lighter leads. What they run to, I don't know. I may have to cut them off, just to see what stops working. Delightful.
Then, there is a taped-off grey line that ends in an antenna jack that snakes under the carpet. Since there is a second, active one, that works, I am puzzled as to what this thing is and what it is supposed to do.
I won't spend much time discussing the pounds of sunflower seed hulls and styrofoam peanuts that are in there. Suffice it to say they do not belong there.
Removing the console wasn't that hard... since half the screws/bolts that are supposed to be holding it in place were missing. Lots of contact cement, though.
I have begun testing for the bad component in the vacuum system. I have a little hand-held vacuum pump. I know I'm close to the fault because I can hear it. I hook up the pump to a line, and go: pump. and the car goes: hiss. Pump, hiss; pump, hiss. So whatever the leak is, will hopefully not be any deeper in the guts of the dash. But I'm too cold to play with it any more.
If anybody can tell me what that extra grey antenna cable is for, if it's stock, or something I can eliminate, I'd be obliged.
thanks

I wholeheartedly agree... POs suck!
My center console was held in with 3 drywall screws through the leather just in front of the cassette box. The reason... the POS Sansui AM/FM cassette deck was running into the ball of wires stuffed behind the console preventing the console from going in correctly.

I am exactly where you are, fortunately for me the PO never needed to get this far so everything came out as its supposed - lucky me.
Could the extra lead be for a phone aerial/antenna. Had one of those but it was black.
My center and footwell actuators are leaking so need to replace them. I found it a lot easier to test all the vacuum circuits once I had removed the manifiold from under the centre console.

I don't know why, but every time I see your thread title, " I hate PO's," Sir Mix-A-Lot keeps going thru my mind:
I hate PO's, but(t)....
I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung
Wanna pull up tough
Cuz you notice that butt was stuffed
...
I've seen them dancin'
To hell with romancin'
She's Sweat, Wet, got it goin like a turbo vette
...
So your girlfriend throws a Honda
Playin workout tapes by Fonda
But Fonda ain't got a motor in the back of her Honda
My anaconda don't want none unless you've got buns hun
You can do side bends or sit-ups, but please don't lose that butt
...

My consol is out too. It came out in about an hour. Not too bad and I could halve that next time. I'm fixing half a dozen small defects, mostly caused by the leather warping, in preparation for a concours at the end of the month. I made an aluminium brace to replace the broken-off rear mountings but couldn't find an adhesive to secure it to the ABS plastic so I had to screw it on. I have glue that sticks to ABS but not to anything else. Anybody know a glue that can do this?

Strange... I removed the rear seats from my 91 GT a couple of weeks ago and found quite a few sunflower seeds. They were in areas that seemed impossible to get to except when being built??

Here's a picture of mine.

I'm just about to refit the consol. The brace is 1.2mm aluminium. (You might not be able to get that where you live but alUminum is nearly as good!). It's bent to fit the profile at the back of the shift lever aperture. Because I couldn't find a suitable glue I fixed it with self tapping screws. There is enough thickness in the consol to take screws of just under 1/2" .

Since I moved here from the UK I have had a hell of a problem buying aluminium. Now you have pointed out it is called alUminium maybe I will have better luck!!!!
