Will 928 16" phone dials fit on an S4? I can use spacers if I have to, but I seem to recall hearing a long time ago that there was some problem with brake clearance. I searched the old threads but I can't find a definitive answer. Can it be done?

Last month, I met a guy that had an 86.5 (S4 brakes) and he had phone dials on his car. I was amazed as I too had thought it was impossible.
There was between 1/8 and 1/4" of clearance between the calipers and the wheel. A very tight fit.
This might actually be a your mileage may vary scenario.
There may be more than 2 different sizes of phone dials - this may be a good time for an expert to chime in, but I DONE SEEN EM FIT WITH MINE OWN TWO EYES!
I would have loved to have done this 9 or 10 years ago. I liked the phone dials better than dish and my S would have really been stealthy looking older than it really was.
The fellow I mentioned may be at SITM this year so, for those attending, be prepared to be amazed.

I like phone dials! The problem with these is that they are 16 ", and the 928 looks best with 17 inch wheels.
Alfa Romeo sold their 156 model in Europe with a five-oval 17 inch wheel that is essentially a cheap copy of the phone dial. I'm sure the offset is wrong, since it sits nearly flat. Porsche's 5 x 130 lug is another story.

Phone Dials did come in 8" widths...just not on the 928. I loved the Phone Dials so much that I looked into getting the ones I have off the 82 modified. I called a few custom wheel shops to see if they could cut out the centers and mount them on 17" rims. I thought that it shouldn't be too tough to machine bolt holes all the way around the center and then mount to a 17" rim with lip for bolting. Offsets could be made to what ever spec requested. Unfortunately, I was told this could not be done...which I still think it can.
However, I was told that you can always have them widened!
I guess the only other option is to have them mapped into a computer and have them cut out of aluminum to what ever diameter you want.
I too wish there were at least 17" Phone Dial's out there.
