BUT...
It won't come out further until I deal with this...the fuel injection wiring harness. Do I need to feed all of the connections out from the fuse panel through the firewall....or figure out a way to remove the fuel rails with the engine on the hoist and disconnect the harness ends from the engine?

If you can't pry the grommet out...
Cut the grommet.
Cut on an angle not at right angle.
Make sure there is enough slack on the cables so you can play with the connector ends.
If it it still does'nt give you enough room there is always the old stand-by.
Drill four 'corner' holes, connect the holes with a cutting wheel/snips/jig saw and make a plate to cover it upon reassembly. If you do the latter watch where you drill/cut for pesky wires same for the self-tapping screws when you make the plate cover, and seal it well.
If you cut the grommet on an angle you can generallly reuse it seal the cut and make sure on reassembly the cut is in the 12 o'clock position.
BTW the engine , though obviously hurting, is quite a clean looking specimen already.
Watch your break torque pattern on the head bolts even if they are cold.
Replace all vacuum lines while you are in there.
This should make you a believer in anti-sieze compound as well.
Hang tough... when this is all over you are going to be one of the Queen Bee's of the BTDT Crew.
Lemme see ... headers, those adustable cam timing gear adapters, Ford injectors, SC kit.....
