I spent some time disconnecting the last few items and suspending the exhaust. The engine is loose and comes up on the hoist about 5 or 6 inches and then begins lifting the car up with it.
It looks like the bellhousing, which I left on, but disconnected from the torque tube because the bellhousing-to-block bolts are stuck, is getting caught on the firewall as the engine moves up. I don't see that anyhing else is getting in the way.
So...yet another question. For those of you that have pulled your engines (Sterling et al.) with the bellhousing in place, did you run into the firewall and how did you get the engine out?
I'm so close!!
P.S. My rebuilt heads are done and scheduled to ship any day now.

Did you tilt the engine so the bell housing is down and the front of the engine up? Whenever I've pulled an engine (not on a 928 yet) I've usually had to tilt it by at least 45 degrees. A tilt-bar really helps.
Often, the front of the engine is lifted a couple of inches more than the back ( tilted) and advanced forward the same amount (roll the chassis back or engine stand forward). That should allow firewall clearance.

I've got the bar that tilts one side vs. the other. If I set it so it favors the passenger/front lift point, should that tilt the engine so that the front end is higher? I think I've been doing the reverse...adjusting the bar so that the back end is lifted higher. Duh. I'll have to wait until this evening to try again. I'm now playing Mr. Mom while my bride is out shopping.

Good luck Dave. Sounds like you're really close now.
Dave,
I don't know if this usually applies to your year model, but make sure you have removed all of the wire harness brackets. One wire harness bracket was hidden just on top of the cross member. I nearly lifted my shark by the harness because of this.
I removed my engine with bell housing attached as well, but my AC condensor was not installed so I had a bit more forward room. You may have to resort to removing the fan from the front of the engine to give yourself a bit more room.

The fan is already off, but I need to check out the wiring stuff. I think I have everything disconnected, but I need to look again. Hopefully I'll have the engine out tonight if I get some more time to go out to the garage.
Thanks everyone.
