Just took mine off my '88 yesterday and used a 1 1/16" socket. Nice trick I picked up off Greg Nichols tips site: when starting the nut back on, use some quarters rolled and taped together to effectively make the socket shallower..worked great.

Unfortunately a 27mm deep socket (that you would use for the crank pully bolt) will not quite fit, the normal chrome ones are fine though.

I used a 1 1/16" socket on my '79. Not a perfect fit, but easily good enough. Didn't think about using valuable quarters to make the socket shallow. I use a bit of sponge or crumpled up newspapers (preferably the editorials).
