Default Rear AC Removal

Removing the rear AC from my 91 GT. Any secrets? I didn't find it in the manuals.

THANKS!

I did this on my 89 Jim. Rear unit has hard lines comming from front hard lines under the car, UP through the floor under the pass seat, into a coupler, and up the tunnel to the exhanger. They constantly leak. You'll need to either cap off the lines there at the coupler, or even better where there are some threaded connections under the car (passenger side).

There is also a electric valve thats heavy and under the seat as well. I have no idea why they even did the system this way. Some wires go back there too, to control the fan, etc. There is a drainage line for the exchanger that you can cap off under the unit.

I took my hard lines out (you probably can't with the engine IN) and am having the braches welded shut.

When you remove the union in the floor there will be a 2 inch gaping hole there. I still haven't figured out how to close it up.

Jim and or Brendan, what are you putting in the place of the rear a/c? Can you easily retrofit it with the rear glovebox type? Any idea of the cost?

I have a rear leather "hump" from an old 81 that I could use, if its recovered.

I was also just thinking of having some paddin put down and some nice smelly leather. Whatever is lightest.

Aaron,

I have a rear glovebox that I will be sizing tonight so I will post follow up tomorrow. Like Brendan said you can just cover. My back up plan is possibly my CD changer going there.

Brendan,

I'd be interested in knowing what the 'space where the a/c was' looks like. Might bring some ideas as to what could go there. If you have pics I'd like to see them. If not, no problem.

Jim,

If you remove your rear AC don't throw it away. It has value, especially the evaporator. They leak and are difficult to fix.

Mark,

Here are some pics I took tonight. Straightforward job. I had to take the back mounting hex bolts out from the front seat so I could lift it a bit to remove the lines. They used some ferocious glue on the carpet/vinyl that runs under the back seat.
